자신을 닮은 존재를 만들고자 하는 인간의 성품은 아마도 신이 부여한 최고의 선물 중의 하나일 것이다. 많은 영화나 만화의 소재 중에서도 인조인간이나 인공지능 등에 관한 것은 모든 사람을 자극하는 중요한 소재다. 

이미 수십년전 일본 만화의 대부라고 할 수 있는 오사무 테즈카의 원작 "매트로폴리스"를 애니메이션으로 만난다는 것은 무척 흥분되는 일이다.  아름다운 영상미와 음악은 내용을 충실하게 뒷바침해준다. 자신의 정체성을 찾기 위해 노력하고, 자신이 이용당함에 분노하는 것은 주인공만이 아닐 것이다.

하지만 인간도 아니면서 어쩌면 더 인간적인 정서를 가진 주인공의 모습을 통해서만 참된 인간성이 무엇인가를 깨달아야만 한다면 인간이라는 존재는 이 지구상에 있을 가치가 없는, 사라져야할 존재일지 모르겠다. 우리는 더 늦기 전에 내면의 소리에 귀를 기울이고 올바른 삶과 역사의 방향을 잡아야만 할 것이다.

사족: 왜 우리는 이런 작품을 아직도 못 만들어 내는 것일까?
