Virtue ethicists (1) want to emphasize the fact that, if children are to be taught to be honest, they must be taught to love and prize the truth, and that merely teaching them not to lie will not achieve this end. But they need not deny that, to achieve this end, teaching them not to lie is useful, or even dispensable.
그래서 want to (need to) vs. need not 의 대구로 받았다.
(2) UNCODIFIABILITY
What then of the claim that virtue ethics, typically, rejects the idea that ethics is codifiable in rules or principles that can provide specific action guidance? It now (3) stands revealed as a claim that invites the rather tiresome response, ‘Well, it all depends on what you mean by “codifiable”.’
Stands revealed 는 being revealed 로 받았다.
One reason has been (4)the increasing sense that the enterprise of coming up with such a set of rules or principles has failed. In this early, heady days of applied ethics, it looked feasible, but (5) as more philosophers relying on the same abstract principles applied them in such a way as to produce different conclusions, as different modifications or exclusion clauses were put on the general principles to yield different conclusions, as more philosophers trying to resolve real-life hard cases in medical ethics found themselves compelled to say that there were good arguments on both sides—as, quite generally, the gap between the abstract principles and(6) the complex particularity of concrete moral situations became more obvious, so the idea that the rules should have both the features mentioned began to lose its appeal.
(5) as 가 반복되고 있다. as time goes 정도로 받을까 아니면 because 로 받을까 좀 생각해 보다가, 실제로 옮겨 놓으니 because 로 했을 때 좀 딱딱한 것 같아서 as time goes 로 받았다.
The Devil,(6) after all, can quote scripture to serve his own purposes; one can conform to (7)the letter of a rule while violating its spirit. Hence it was recognized that a certain amount of virtue and corresponding moral or practical wisdom (phronesis) might be required both to interpret the rules and to determine which rule was most appropriately to be applied in a particular case.
구글로 확인검색을 했는데 거기서도 the letter of a rule 에 무슨 별다른 의미가 담긴 구의 용례는 못 찾았다.
