The difficulty of being able to predict the consequences of one’s actions does not bring with it the threat of moral relativism or moral skepticism; it is just a general problem in life. However, if the consequences concern happiness, as in the utilitarian account, doesn’t the threat come in there? Different cultures, different individuals, have different ideas of happiness. How can we know that a particular action is right if we cannot define precisely and correctly that ‘happiness’ we are supposed to be maximizing?
I think that one might well press something along these lines as a problem for utilitarianism, and this is a point to which I shall return below. But it is hardly plausible to say it shows that act utilitarianism is immediately open to the threat of moral relativism and skepticism. Suppose people’s ideas of happiness do vary; why should that matter, for practical purposes? This person will be happy if I give her a book on the religious contemplation and upset if I give her a sexy novel, someone else will delight in the novel but be bored to tears by the other. If I can afford both books, act utilitarianism makes it perfectly clear what I should do, without having to define happiness or worry about the fact that these two people doubtless have very different ideas of it. As Jonathan Glover robustly remarks, ‘most of us, whether utilitarians or not, take some account of the likely effects of our actions on people’s happiness, and we should all be in a mess if there was no correspondence between trying to make someone happier and succeeding.
So let us say, for the moment, that act utilitarianism is not immediately threatened by the spectre of moral relativism or skepticism but that virtue ethics, in company with deontology, is. And, having said it and acknowledged the problem, let us put it on one side for later chapters. For the moment I shall assume that both deontology and virtue ethics give an open-ended, and familiar, list in their second premises. Deontology, we may suppose, lists such familiar rules as ‘Do not kill’, ‘Tell the truth’, ‘Keep promises’, ‘Do no evil or harm to others’, ‘Help others/promote their well-being’, etc.; virtue ethics lists such familiar character traits as justice, honesty, charity, courage, practical wisdom, generosity, loyalty, etc. And, having assumed that, we can return to the question of whether virtue ethics, even given such a list, somehow fails to provide guidance in the way that act utilitarianism and deontology do.
