EPISTEMOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
At this stage we may notice an interesting division in the three accounts, a division which puts act utilitarianism on one side, and deontology and virtue ethics on the other. As soon as act utilitarianism produces its second premise, saying that the best consequences are those in which happiness is maximized, we seem to know where the act utilitarian stands. (I shall question below whether we really do, but we certainly seem to.) We can work out that the act utilitarian will say, for example, that it is right to tell a lie when telling the truth would make no one happy and someone very unhappy. But whether we know what a deontologist and a virtue ethicist will say about such a case after they have produced their second premises depends on the form they take.
If a list of correct moral rules or virtues is given, we have something fairly concrete. If one list contains ‘Do not lie’ and the other ‘Honesty’, we can work out that the deontologist and virtue ethicist are probably not going to agree with the act utilitarian about the rightness of telling the lie. But what if the deontologist’s second premise is one of the others I gave? We all know that there has been, and is, much dispute about what God has laid down, and about what it is rational to accept, and so on—in short, much dispute about which moral rules or principles are the correct ones. When a deontologist produces one of her abstract tests for the correctness of a moral rule, we may be sure that she will defend and justify the rules she believes are correct in terms of it—but what these will be we do not know. Will she defend rules prohibiting suicide or abortion or rules permitting them? Will she turn out to be a pacifist or a supporter of killing in self-defense? We do not know.
Virtue ethics is similarly non-committal. We all know, it is said, that there has been, and is, much dispute about which character traits are the virtues. When a virtue ethicist produces one of her abstract tests, we may be sure that she will defend the character traits she believes are the virtues in terms of it, and dismiss the ones she does not accept—but what these will be we do not know. Will she defend humanity, modesty, and compassion or (like Hume, Aristotle, and Nietzsche, respectively) will she dismiss them? Will she defend impartiality or friendship? We do not know.
