'오기렌의 크리스마스 이야기'라는 책으로 번역된 것을 읽었던 기억이 난다. 한국에서는 이 이야기가 다른 이야기들과 함께 아주 두꺼운 책으로 나와서 이 이야기 고유의 느낌을 전달하지 못했었던 것 같다. 실제로 이 이야기를 원작으로 한 영화 '스모크'에 더 집중한 탓인 듯. 그런데 이 책은 이 이야기 하나만을 담고 있어서 분위기를 잘 살리고 있고, 아주 얇지만 예쁜 illustration도 있고 제본도 잘 되어 있어서 아주 고급스럽다. 

위에 적어 놓은 글은 이 책의 뒷표지에 실린 글이다. 명쾌한 해설이다. 그런데 모든 것이 뒤바뀌어있다는 설정은 너무 인위적이지 않은가 하는 느낌이 든다. 이러한 설정을 좋아하는 사람은 오스터에 빠지는 것이고 나처럼 너무 인위적이라고 생각하는 사람은.. 어쨌든 폴 오스터가 이 시대 최고의 이야기꾼이라는 사실은 부정할 수 없는 것 같다.

뒤바뀌고 뭐고 간에 나에게 가장 인상깊은 대목은 손자가 아닌 줄을 알면서도 손자처럼 대하며 크리스마스 식사를 함께 하는 눈먼 할머니와 손자로 속이고 싶은 마음은 없었으면서도 할머니와 함께 있는 게 좋아서 손자 행세를 하며 할머니와 식사를 하는 오기렌이 나오는 대목이다. 두 사람은 모두 외로웠기에 연극을 한 것이다. 그것이 연극인 줄 알면서도 말이다. 참 다들 정말 외롭구나! 그렇다. 외로우니까 사람인 것이다. 어찌 보면 장난스럽게 여겨질 이 장면이 나에게는 가슴시리게 느껴졌다.
