'사라지는 아이들'로 번역이 되었던 적이 있었지만 지금은 출간되지 않은 듯..하지만 이 번역은 어이없는 번역..유괴나 납치를 연상시키는 제목..오히려 유년기의 위기라든가, 유년기의 소멸, 사라지는 유년기 등과 같은 제목이 더 낫지 않을까?

간단히 말하면 유년기는 근대에 만들어진 것이고-중세에는 '아동'의 개념 자체가 없었다고 한다-, 최근-물론 80년대이지만- 급격히 사라지고 있다는 것이다. '유년'의 개념은 문자의 발명과 인쇄술의 발달로부터 비롯되었다고 한다. 어른들만 아는 세상이 바로 문자 세상..그런데 미디어혁명으로 - 그래픽은 이미지로 의미를 전달하기 때문에 누구나 이해할 수 있다.- 이제 어른과 아이의 구분이 없어졌단다. 너무나 충격적인 내용이고 너무나 적확한 주장이다. 내가 90년대 고스란히 경험했던 것의 원인을 이미 80년대 초반에 닐 포스트만은 정확하게 짚어내고 있었던 것이다. 막연히 인터넷 때문에 아이와 어른의 구분이 없어지고 학교가 무너지고 있다고 생각했으나..원인은 더 멀리에 있었다. 바로 TV..그럼 우리는 어떻게 해야하는가!! 맥루한처럼 새로운 사회에 대한 밝은 전망을 가지고 있지 않다. 나도 포스트만도..아이들이 미디어에 노출되는 시간을 줄이자는 대안을 마지막에 내놓기는 하지만..그도 말했듯이 쉽지 않은 일이다.
