연이 날아오르기 위해서는 난기류를 만나서 그것을 뛰어넘어야만 가능하다

도서관에서 2$에 구입. 도서관 중고책 판매코너에서 책을 사들이는 것이 내 유일한 사치인데 이 책을 고른 이유는 순전히 얇은 책의 두께와 예쁜 표지;;

100쪽이 안 되는 이 책은 처음부터 몰입해서 보기에는 약간 어려움이 있었지만 편지 형식으로 자신의 암이야기, 어린 딸이 응급실에 가게 된 사건, 소중한 이의 죽음, 기증 받은 정자로 아이를 낳은 딸의 이야기를 풀어내고 있다.(맞나?;; 딸들에게 쓰는 편지 형식이라 남편도 아빠라고 부르고 해서 관계를 이해하는 데 꽤 시간이 걸렸다;;)

연이 날아오르기 위해서는(to lift) 난기류(turbulence)를 만나서 그것을 뛰어넘어야만 가능하다는 것이 제목의 의미..부모가 된다는 것도 그러하다는 것이 주제일 텐데 워낙 개인적인 이야기를 짧게 풀어내서 그녀의 전작을 읽는 것이 낫겠다는 생각이 들었다. 

The smell of the hospital, the sting of those overhead lights in the night, the snippets of conversation I'd overheard stayed with me and marked the beginning of how I came to know what a bold and dangerous thing parenthood is. Risk was not an event we'd survived but the place where we now lived..

Parenthood is what happens when everything is flipped over and spilling everywhere and you can't find a towel or a sponge or your "inside" voice. 

You fly from  thermal to thermal, looking for lift..A thermal is a column of hot air surrounded by turbulence...Turbulence is the only way to get altitude, to get lift. Without turbulence, the sky is just a big blue hole. Without turbulence, you sink.
