이번 책에서 Ivan Illich는 Professionalism 에 대해서 그 핵심적인 생각의 근저들을 드러낸다. 그는 Professionalism에 대해서 5가지의 환상(illusion)이 있다고 한다.
1. The first enslaving illusionis the idea that people are born to be consumers and that they can attain any of their goals by purchasing goods and services.
2. The second enslaving illusion conceptualized technological progress as a kind of engineering product licencing more professional domination.
3. The third disabling myth expects that effective, tools for lay-use must first be certifed by professional tests.
4. The fourth disabling illusion looks to experts for limits to growth.
5. The fifth enslaving illusion is this year's radical chic.
이 다섯가지 illusion이 인간을 commodite에서 살아가도록 하고, 기술적인 지배력을 점점 높여간다고 이야기한다. 인간의 verb는 noun이 되어져 하나의 상품으로 취급되어지고, package와 complexity한 상품 집약적인 사회는 인간의 labor intensive society를 대신하게 된다. 결과 인간은 자신의 자유를 잃어버리게 된다. 이러한 전문가 주의는 industrial state에서는 벗어날수 없는 필연적인 결과이다. 우리가 이러한 발전을 제한하고, tools for conviviality를 발전시킬 때, 인간의 자유를 담보할 수 있지 않을까 생각해본다.
