Lean and mean, dark and disturbing thriller

Why is everyone talking about the ending of BEHIND HER EYES? 라는 구절 하나로 읽기 시작했다. 이런저런 사이코 스릴러를 읽어 보았지만 이 작품은 딱히 인상깊지 않고 읽어나가는 것이 지지부진하게 느껴졌다. 다만 도통 이야기가 어떻게 전개될지 예상이 잘 안 되어서 끝까지 읽게 되었는데 그 유명한 마지막 반전은 정말 마지막에 나온다. 마지막 서너페이지가 다했다고 할 정도이다. 

다 읽고 나니 사이코 스릴러 작가들이 궁금해졌다. 대체 머리 속에 뭐가 들었길래 이런 작품을 쓰나 싶기도 하고. 어떤 작가적 욕망이 이런 작품을 쓰게 하는 걸까. 작품을 통해서 토해낸 작가의 의도는 무엇이었을까. 

Joe Hill이 말했듯 이 작품은 Lean and mean, dark and disturbing, this is the kind of novel that takes over your life. Sarah Pinborough slays. 적확한 표현인 듯하다. 

신년 벽두에 읽은 첫 책으로는 매우 어둡고 무시무시한 책이었다.
