실전에 바로 적용가능한 자기계발서

모든 일에는 때가 있다고 했던가. 아니, 그 때는 스스로 만들어 내는 것일까.

나는 자기계발서는 잘 읽지 않는다. 가장 큰 이유는 그들이 표지만 다르지 다들 비슷비슷한 이야기를 하고 있기 때문이다. 강렬한 제목에 끌려 어떤 책을 집어 든다 하더라도 결국 작가가 말하는 내용은 어딘가에서 들어봤던 그 소리다. 어투나 내용의 구체성이라던가 그런 세부적인 장식의 차이만 있을 뿐. 그렇게 매번 같은 이야기를 들으면서도, 사람들은 자신이 '아직' 찾지 못한 해답이 여기에는 있을거라 믿으며 또다시 책을 집어들지만 결국 마지막장을 덮고 나서야 그들은 깨닫는다. 아, 이 책도 똑같은 소리를 하는구나.

하여간에 이 책도 그런 책들과 그렇게 크게 차이가 있어서 완전히 새로운 인사이트를 제시하는 그런 책은 아니다. 대신 굉장히 구체적이고 실전적인 조언들을 해주고 있기에 나는 아주 높은 점수를 주고 싶다. 실은 내가 여태까지 읽었던 자기계발서들은 구체적인 실천 지침서는 잘 제시해 주지 않아서 인생 가치관 정립에는 도움이 되었지만 실질적으로 내 일상을 바꾸는 데 그렇게 큰 도움이 되지는 않았었다. 그래서 더욱 자기계발서에는 손이 가지 않았던 것이고. 

내게 자기계발서란, 약간 이런 느낌이다. 수험공부를 할 때 누구나 기본서 한권씩은 필요하지만 그렇다고 해서 특정저자의 특정 기본서가 모두에게 바이블처럼 여겨지는 것은 아니다. 수험생들은 각자의 성향에 따라 저자도, 출판사도, 내용도 조금씩은 다른, 저 자신에게 맞는 기본서를 선택한다. 하지만 그것이 '기본'서이니만큼 주된 내용과 큰 흐름은 비슷하다. 약간의 장식적인 차이만이 있을 뿐이다. 

인생을 사는 데 자기계발서의 역할도 이것과 비슷하다고 본다. 살면서 흔들릴 때, 길을 잃은 것 같을 때, 누군가의 조언이 절실할 때, 그런 때 정답은 내려주지 못해도 나만의 인생길을 찾아가는 데 등불은 되어 줄 수 있는게 자기계발서 아닐까. 하지만 The Answer가 나에게는 좋은 등불이었지만 다른 이에겐 식상하고 고리타분한 헛소리로 들릴 수도 있다. 그사람은 또 그 나름대로의, 그 자신에게 맞는 기본서를 찾아 낼 것이다. 그것이 나에게도 똑같은 등불이 될 지는 미지수이지만.

인생에서 안중요한 시기가 어디있겠냐마는, 전반적으로 새로운 생활터전에 적응해나가고 있는 요즘의 나에게 꼭 필요한 책이었다. 책의 마지막장을 덮고 나니, 내가 글자를 읽을 수 있다는 것, 이 책이 내 모국어로 번역이 되었다는 것, 저자가 자신이 깨달은 삶의 지혜를 녹여 책을 출판했다는 그 모든것에 감사함이 밀려온다.

그리고 결정적으로, 이 책을 먼저 읽고, 나에게 선물해준 J 에게 고맙다는 말을 전하고 싶다.

인생의 불꽃을 찾아서

 뉴욕주민을 알게 된 것은 유튜브를 통해서였다. 그 하고많은 컨텐츠 중에 내가 처음으로 접했던 것은 워라밸에 대한 그의 의견이 담긴 영상이었다. 워라밸을 유지하면서 성공하고 싶은 이들에게 냉정하고도 가혹한 그의 충고가 담긴 영상. 틀린 말 하나 없는 그의 영상을 보면서 왜 이렇게 웃음이 나던지. 정확히는 '노예'라는 말이 정말 나에게 딱 맞는 말이어서 그렇게 웃음이 나왔나보다.

 그리고 생각해봤다. 그만두지않는 이상 삶에서 가장 많은 시간을 보내게 될 직장인데, 이렇게 주어진대로 노예처럼 일만하며 시간을 죽일 것인가? 아니면 주도적으로 성취감을 느끼며 살것인가? 그 길이 쉽지는 않겠지만 그만큼 설레고 가슴 떨리는 길일 수도 있다. 이렇게 약간 애매한 깨달음을 얻은 채로 나는 뉴욕주민이 어떤 삶을 살았는지 너무 궁금해졌고, 그가 삶에 가진 열정을 조금이나마 엿보고 내 인생의 장작으로 쓰고 싶었다. 그래서 그날 바로 책을 샀다. 

 그는 자신의 치열했던 삶을 일일이 늘어놓는 대신 매우 담백하게 서술한다. 그것부터가 너무 멋있다. 그렇게 치열하게, 자신이 하고 싶은 일을 하면서, 하루하루 그렇게 자신의 최선을 끌어내면서 사는 삶. 그 삶이 너무 빛나고 멋지게 보였다. 그리고, 그동안 책을 읽으면서 이런 생각을 해본 적이 없었는데, 책을 내줘서 정말 감사한 생각이 들었다. 그가 책을 내지 않았더라면, 나는 평생 만날 수 없는 월가의 삶을 상상조차 해볼 수 없었을 것이다. 책은 투자에 대한 조언이 주를 이루지만 이를 조금만 바꾸면 인생 자체에 적용할 수 있는 주옥같은 문장들이다. 그 몇개를 남겨 오늘부터의 내 삶을 이루는 주춧돌로 삼고자 한다.

사실 이는 ‘지적 정직함 intellectual honesty‘을 중시하는 월가 헤지펀드 조직 문화에서 암묵적으로 통용되는 개념이기도 하다. 지적 정직함이란 그 어떤 사실, 가치도 당연하게 받아들이지 않고, ‘나는 아직 모른다, 알 수 없다‘에서 시작해서 가설정립, 합리적 의심과 끝없는 도전, 검증과정을 거쳐서 완전한 결론에 다다를 수 있어야 한다는 뜻이다. - P108

Delusion of Elysian Fields

The book is really absorbing but at the end I can't help myself asking "Why the author wrote this..?"

Life has been so harsh and miserable to Blanche that I can't blame her sleeping with her student. She already paid for that. Some may say that she's been too rude to her brother-in-law but Stanley IS a common. He punched his wife just because she was a interference to him playing a poker game. Even considering this was wrote in 1940s, this violation is the thing that can't be condoned. 

As I cannot understand why this is that popular among American - it also won the prize!- I googled a bit to find out its attractive point and found out an interesting article. It has turned out that Stanley's animal-like attractiveness is the one! Gaudy seed-bearer, the author depicts Stanley. This is also the one makes Stella keep going back to him despite his violence on her.

I may gonna see the movie as I found out that the actor who played Stanley is super hot. His name is Brando and the article that I found above said, "He is in fantastic physical condition and wear T-shirrt - altered by costumers to be tighter than usual- that show off his physique." haha. Also it says the film based on the book was a step forward in the evolution of American movies, bringing audiences startling, raw emotion that they'd seldom seen on the big screen before. We have to keep in mind that the film was released in 1950s! Without boldly mentioning sex, it made spectators soak into the scenario and characters. Maybe this is why it was popular at that time.

Factfulness - it's time to update your worldview

The book shows 10 tips to see the world as it is (as closely possible). In the very first page of the book, there is questionnaire with ten questions and you got to answer it first before start reading. I bought this book at the secondhand book store and this questionnaire is what made me buy this book. The author said he was quite surprised when he found out that even the smartest and even the most educated people can't beat the chimps - the random selection of answers which means they don't know about the world. Their data set is stuck in somewhere in 1960s and this is what driving resources distributed in wrong places. The author pointed out 10 instincts which distort our worldview so that we can beware of them when we face those instincts. Though there are still some omitted considerations on the world, this is still a good assistant help you see the world as it is.

1. The Gap Instinct

 The first instinct which distorts our worldview. There is no such thing as "Us" and "Them". There was a gap in the past - like 1960s- but not anymore. The author Hans insists to divide world into four groups according to the income level, and majority of the world population are in the middle-level 2 and level 3. So the thought that there's probably a huge gap between rich countries and poor countries is just a mere imagination now. To control this instinct, you should mind looking for the majority and beware to fall in to a data distortions with averages and extremes.

2. The Negativity Instinct

The second one is related to the first one - the gap instinct. Actually all ten instinct are related tho.

This is the instinct which drives you to think situation worse than it is. This was probably helpful when we were foragers since optimist and naive ones would die easily than others - but now, this is what distorts our sight even when we face the data. Well, talking about the world poverty, it has improved dramatically and the population living in extreme poverty has almost halved in the last 20 years. You should keep in mind that situation could be both bad and better. It may in the bad circumstances but it could be still improving. Since gradual improvements is not the one which news and media loves, so keep that in mind that don't be fooled with what media says.

3. The Straight Line Instinct

Things don't grow steady. The straight line in a graph is one of the rare trend in the world. Instead, S-Bends or Slides is the ones you can see relatively common and there's still various kind of trend including Humps and Doubling Lines. Don't assume the data will grow forever. 

4. The Fear Instinct

This is also the one helped us survive in prehistoric times but now it is one of the instincts which hinders our understanding on the world. When we were afraid, we tend to get situation worse than it really is and lack to decide rationally. To control the fear instinct, calculate the risks and get calm before you carry on.

-It isn't driven by "media logic" among the producers so much as by "attention logic" in the heads of the consumers.(p107)

5. The Size Instinct

We easily can be fooled by numbers if we take just a lonely number. You cannot decided whether it is large or small with only just a number alone. You have to compare it with other numbers. A good way to figure out the importance of the number is using proportion. Even the number itself looks big, its actual size can be found out with comparison.

6. The Generalization Instinct

The one we are so easily driven by in daily life. We tend to make a decision on a group based on its single individual because that is an easy and effective way. But you know, this is also an easy way to lead you to the wrong path. When you face this, question your categories. Look for differences within groups, similarities across groups.

7. The Density Instinct

Remember saying, "Slow and Steady wins the race." When change is slowly done, it is hard to conceive it but it is STILL change. But these changes are not the one media like which makes it harder to recognize. But, it is still change. To see that little turtle is slowing moving forward, keep track of gradual improvements and update your date. Talking your parents or even grandparents would be a good way to go.

8. The Single Perspective Instinct

The saying "give a child a hammer and everything looks like a nail." suddenly remind me of my times in University. I majored Statistics and when I studied that one, everything in the world seems like it could be solved in a statistical way. And this very instinct is the one we should beware of. With just one single data, there could be various perspective of view on that so don't be buried in a single perspective. You should get a toolbox, no a hammer.

9. The Blame Instinct

Everything in this modern society is related to one another complicatedly. So when problem broke out, it is hard to take just one definite cause for this reason. But it is our instinct to eager to find a villain and blame him for all the problems. But it is not the world it is. You should resist finding a scapegoat and look for causes and systems, not villains or heroes. 

10. The Urgency Instinct

"Now and Never" give us pressure to do something right now but it also relieves us not to do anything. Because it takes off the guilty feeling of not doing as saying now or NEVER. In this way it blocks our roads and our minds. Media, journalists and activists are tend to exaggerate the situation in a worse way to make people take part in and take action. But this kind of urgency feeling not only can make us take action but also it could make us block our mind and do not pay attention anymore. What needs for solving problem is not urgency feeling but small actions. Take small steps when you face this instinct. Organize the data and be wary of drastic action.

I felt sorrow when I found out that the author Hans passed away before the book is published. During the reading I felt like he is talking right next to me like grandpa, advising me in a strict but pleasant way. Tho there are still a lot of elements worsening the world did not described in the book, "Factfulness' is a very good assistant helping seeing the world properly, as it is.

자신이 무엇을 기다리는지조차 명확히 알지 못한 채 기다리는 삶을 사는 현대인들. 기다리는 삶을 사는 나. 이것은 나에 대한 이야기. 현재를 살지 못하는 현대인에 대한 이야기이다. 

기다림의 삶...기다림..기다림..

나는 무엇을 기다리고 있는 것인가?

작가 사뮈엘 베케트가 <'고도'가 무엇인지 알았다면 작품 속에 썻을 것>이라고 말한 것처럼 고도는 우리가 기다리는, 그러나 오지 않는 그 무엇일 것이다. 극 전반에 깔려있는 잔잔한 허무함. 그들은 마침내 고도가 오면 이 지루한 기다림이 끝이 날것이라 믿지만, 막이 더 이어진다 해도 아마 고도는 오지 않을 것이다. 마찬가지로 1막과 2막에서 계속된 것처럼 그들은 1막이 시작되기 이전부터 한참 전부터 고도를 기다리고 있었을 것이다. 너무나 오랫동안 지속된 기다림에 이젠 기다림의 목적도 잊고, 이유도, 시간도, 방금 전에 만났던 이들도, 자신의 대한 기억도 모두 흐릿하게 잊어버리고 '기다린다'는 목적 의식만 습관적으로 붙잡은 채 그렇게 기다린다. 마침내 한 소년을 통해 고도는 올것이라 말하지만 아마도 그는...

뒤로 갈수록 건망증이 심해지지만 문득문득 번뜩이는 질문을 던지는 에스트라공. 

에스트라공 (힘없이) 우린 꽁꽁 묶여 있는 게 아닐까? (p27)

고도를 기다리는 행위에 점철되어 오지도 않는, 존재마저 불분명한 고도에 묶여버린 에스트라공과 블라디미르의 모습에서 내 모습을 본다. 나와 사람들의 모습을 본다. 공허하고 흐리멍텅한 구원이라는 허상을 위해 생각하는 권리까지 헐값에 팔아 넘긴 우리들. 생각하는 것은 위험한 일이다. 물론 최악의 상태는 아니지만. 하지만 생각을 안해도 괜찮았을 텐데. 

나무 아래서 지루한 기다림을 반복하는 블라디미르와 에스트라공. 목적도 이유도 잊어버린 기다림을 지리하게 이어가던 그들은 문득 나무를 보고 자살을 떠올린다. 고도가 와야지만 끝나는 이 기다림도, 죽으면 끝낼 수 있으니까. 아니 고도가 와도 이 기다림이 끝난다는 보장은 없지만 죽으면 끝나니까. 하지만 한명이 죽고 나면 나머지 한명이 죽을 방도가 없다는 이유로 그들은 자살 생각마저 가볍디 가볍게 넘겨버린다.

블라디미르 확실한 건 이런 상황에선 시간이 길다는 거다. 그리고 그 긴 시간 동안 우린 온갖 짓거리를 다 해가며 시간을 메울 수밖에 없다는 거다. 뭐랄까 얼핏 보기에는 이치에 닿는 것 같지만 사실은 버릇이 되어버린 거동을 하면서 말이다. 넌 그게 이성이 잠드는 것을 막으려고 하는 짓이라고 할지 모르지. 그 말은 나도 알겠다. 하지만 난 가끔 이런 생각을 해본다. 이성은 이미 한없이 깊은 영원한 어둠 속을 방황하고 있는 게 아닐까 하고 말야. 너 내 말 알아듣겠냐? (p134)

블라디미르 남들이 괴로워하는 동안에 나는 자고 있었을까? 지금도 나는 자고 있는 걸까? 내일 잠에서 깨어나면 오늘 일을 어떻게 말하게 될지? 내 친구 에스트라공과 함께 이 자리에서 밤이 올 때까지 고도를 기다렸다고 말하게 될까? 포조가 그의 짐꾼을 데리고 지나가다가 우리에게 얘기를 했다고 말하게 될까? 아마 그렇겠지. 하지만 이 모든 게 어느 정도나 사실일까? (에스트라공은 구두를 벗으려고 안간힘을 쓰지만 벗겨지지 않는다. 그는 다시 잠들어버린다. 블라디미르가 그를 바라본다) 저 친구는 아무것도 모르겠지. 다시 얻어맞은 얘기나 할 테고 내게서 당근이나 얻어먹겠지...... (사이) 여자들은 무덤 위에 걸터앉아 무서운 산고를 겪고 구덩이 밑에서는 일꾼이 꿈속에서처럼 곡괭이질을 하고. 사람들은 서서히 늙어가고 하늘은 우리의 외침으로 가득하구나. (귀를 기울인다) 하지만 습관은 우리의 귀를 틀어막지. (에스트라공을 바라본다) 나 역시 다른 사람들이 바라보고 있겠지. 그리고 말하겠지. 저 친구는 잠들어 있다. 아무것도 모른다. 자게 내버려두자고. (사이) 이 이상은 버틸 수가 없구나. (사이) 내가 무슨 말을 지껄였지? (p151)

극중 인물의 대사가 상당히 간결하고 상징적이기에 그 무엇을 대입해도 들어맞을 것 같다는 생각이 든다. 자리만 깔아준다면 한 구절을 가지고도 여러가지 해석을 해보는 재미도 있을 것 같다.

그런데 대체 포조와 럭키는 왜 등장한 것일까? 처음 럭키의 등장을 보았을 때는 포조가 시키는 대로 하는 그의 모습이, 심지어 생각마저도 포조가 시키면 하는 그의 모습이 현대사회의 회사원 같이 보였다. 그러나 럭키는 노예였다. 그것도 존재하기 위해선 포조가 필요한 노예. 그는 인간이 아니라 가축이었다. 충분히 포조를 제압할 힘을 가지고 있음에도 불구하고 그에게 복종하는 노예. 가축보다도 못한 대접을 받고 있지만 왜 포조에게 완전 복종하고 있는 것인가? 포조는 나치를, 럭키는 독재자를 비판적으로 바라보지 못하고 무조건적인 굴종을 하는 사람들을 상징하는 것인가? 왜 럭키는 제대로 먹는것도, 쉬는 것도 하지 못하면서 목에 끈이 묶인 채 포조에게 말없이 끌려다니는 것일까?

 아! 혹시 럭키는 고도를 기다리는 에스트라공과 블라디미르와 같은 것일까? 럭키가 물리적으로 포조에게 묶여있다면 에스트라공과 블라디미르는 오지 않는 고도를 기다리면서 고도에게 묶여 있는 것이다. 실로 그들은 제대로 쉬지도 못하고 어느 곳 하나 마음대로 가지 못한 채 나무 한그루 덜렁 있는 황량한 들판에서 어제도 내일도 없이 고도를 기다린다. 또한 끊임없이 지껄임으로써 생각을 하지 않으려 한다. 생각하는 것을 경계한다. 그러는 와중에 에스트라공은 모든 것을 빠르게 잊어가고... 결국 럭키와 다를바 없는 처지에 있는 그들. 심지어 에스트라공은 럭키의 몫으로 포조가 던진 먹다만 닭뼈다귀를 차지한다.

 그렇다면 2막에서 포조는 왜 장님이 되었을까? 왜 그는 럭키보고 벙어리가 되었다고 했을까? 하지만 그가 장님이 되었다고 해서..장님이 되기 전과 그렇게 크게달라진 것 같진 않다. 그래서 장님으로 만들어 버렸나..
