왜 고양이었을까 생각해본다. (물론 나도 고양이를 좋아한다.)

AI가 그려내는 온갖 각박하고 심란한 미래예측의 소용돌이 속에서 안전한 벙커를 발견하고 그 안에 잠긴 느낌이 든다. 미래가 그려내는 그림이 꼭 음울하고 처절하지만은 않다는 걸 보여주는 것 같은 책이다. 

잘 쓴 SF 소설을 읽다보면, 많은 경우, 아니 대부분의 경우 그들은 공상과학의 모습을 하고 사회에 대해 이야기 하고 있을 때가 많다. 그리고 그 사회는 주로 소수자들의 사회다. SF는 과학의 모습을 하고 소수자들의 삶을 이야기한다. 

가끔 책을 읽다보면 전체 줄거리보다도 장면장면의 묘사에 더 사로잡힐 때가 있는데 이번 책도 약간 그랬다. 작중 스테프의 엄마는 스토커 남편을 피해 끊임없이 이사를 다닌다. 그 장면이 어쩐지 너무나 매혹적이어서 자꾸만 책장을 넘기는 원동력이 되었다. 떠나고 싶다는 생각이 자꾸만 든다. 떠나고 싶다. 떠돌고 싶다. 늦은 밤 기차를 타고 달리며 창밖에 펼쳐진 야경을 바라보고 싶다. 상념에 잠기고 싶다. 모르는 도시를 향해 떠나고 싶다. 이곳을 벗어나고 싶다.

하지만 이 모든 상념과 여행에 대한 갈망은 내 생활이 안정적이라는 방증일 것이다. 젊은 베르터의 슬픔의 한 구절을 떠올려본다. 자유를 찾아 떠난 말이 그 자유를 견디지 못하고 다시 안장을 채워달라 마굿간으로 돌아왔다는 얘기. 내 독서 취향은 돌고돌아 베르터에게로 돌아오는 것일까. 어딘가로 떠나고 싶을 때마다 그 말을 떠올린다. 자유를 견디지 못했던 말. 사실 자유는 그것을 갈망하는 대부분의 사람이 그리는 허상일 것이다. 미지에 대한 갈망. 그것이 자유에 대한 갈망으로 이어지는 것이 아닐까. 하지만 우리는 곧 익숙해지고 또다른 미지에 고개를 돌린다. 끊임없이. 계속.

그렇다. 스테프의 떠돌이 생활이 더욱 낭만적으로 보였던 이유는 결국 스테프가 정착할 곳을 찾았기 때문이다. 안정할 수 있는 따스한 그런 곳을 발견했기 때문에 그동안의 그의 떠돌이 생활이 낭만으로 남을 수 있던 것이라고 생각한다.

"야, 네가 스스로 십 대라고 말한다고 해서 정말로 십 대일 거라는 보장은 없잖아."
"그건 맞아." 파이어스타가 말한다. "하지만 헤르미온느가 지금껏 했던 얘기가 전부 거짓이라면, 쟤가 죽는다고 네가 신경을 쓸까? 그럼 죽은 사람은 네 친구가 아닌 거잖아. 네 친구는 존재하지도 않았던 거야. 네가 모르는 낯선 사람이 돼 버리는 건데, 네가 모르는 사람들은 매일 죽고 있어." - P292

문자메시지들만 생각하지 않으면 여기가 안전하다고 느껴진다. 아무도 찾을 수 없다. 지도에서뿐만 아니라 시간에서도 빠져나와 정지해 있는 것 같다. 이사할 때마다 엄마가 찾던 것도 이런 느낌이었겠지. 새로운 곳에 도착했을 때, 그리고 어떤 장소에서 도망쳐야 한다는 느낌이 사라졌을 때 엄마도 이런 기분을 느꼈을까? 아니면 이사하려고 길을 나설 때 이런 기분이었을까? 오늘은 이쯤에서 그만하기로 한다. 더 이상 새로운 질문을 만들어 내지 않을 것이다. - P323

이런 사례가 셀 수 없이 많아. 의무론자들, 아, 뭐냐면, 종교적 계율이나 <마오 주석 어록>같은 엄격한 윤리 규칙을 따르는 사람들은 말해. 아무튼 그런 사람들도 대체로 정말로 싫은 건 어떻게 해서든 에두르는 방법들을 찾아낸단 말야. 결국 인간 대부분에게 윤리적 행위란, 다른 사람에게 애착을 느끼고 그들을 향한 보살핌과 관심에서 우러나오는 행동을 하는 거야. 나는 그렇게 할 수 있는 AI를 만들려고 했어. - P367

“There was something very special, but it wasn’t inside Josie. It was inside those who loved her.”

I guess this one sentence shows what human is like. That we exist in the context of relationship with others and that very relationship is the thing which makes one individual special. 

It’s quite ironic that Klara the robot understands human better than the real human Mr Calapdi. With her brilliant observation, Klara understands that every human has loneliness inside and that one individual cannot be duplicated just by mimicking its behavior. Maybe loneliness is what makes human a human. 

During the text book, people keep mentioning on the loneliness. I’m sure one of the reasons people buying AFs like Klara is to make their child feel less lonely. Klara said she feels sad for those kids who cannot afford to have AF because they would get lonely without an AF. Josie is eager to spend morning time with her mother before her going to work because she does not want to feel lonely. When Klara spotted a woman in the Diner when Rick and Mr. Vance were talking, she also thought the woman looks very lonely since nobody from inside nor outside of the restaurant seems noticed her existence.

Humans flock together because of that potential loneliness and by doing that they may find their reason or rather purpose for their existence. The Mother asks Klara to continue Josie not for Josie’s sake but for her. She said she cannot live her life if Josie passes away like Sal and that is why she wanted Klara to be Josie. This may looks a bit selfish but I think ironically this is what makes our lives beautiful. It is impossible for us to live alone by ourselves severed from all others and that way of living life would only amplify the agony of inherited loneliness. Rather we easily can find our life worthy enough by loving others and sacrificing for those whom we love. Well, in this context I can say Klara, the AF lived the life more humane than any other human.

Mr Capaldi believed there was nothing special inside Josie and that couldn’t be continued. He told the Mother he’d searched and searched and found nothing like that. But I believe now he was searching in the wrong place. There was something very special, but it wasn’t inside Josie. It was inside those who loved her. That’s why I think now Mr Capaldi was wrong and I wouldn’t have succeeded. So I’m glad I decided as I did.

I’ve never expected that the title would have such a meaning. The whole story was like a plot twist after a plot twist which I didn’t see it coming until the very end. Yeah, fish don't exist. I get that. The problem is, picking out which one is the fish and which isn't is not that easy as it seems.

Speaking of Jordan, it was really shocking to find out that he is allegedly killed someone just because she interfered in his way. Well what Jane Stanford have done is more than just interfering since she used her spy to dismiss Jordan but killing someone because of that simple reason is another thing. What he has done is cannot be regarded as a mistake because he has done it twice even when Jane Stanford left for Hawaii to take a rest. It was such an obsessive behavior of him and in a way it looks like chasing after a fish which barely got out of his trap. When the author first suggested that Jane may killed by Jordan, I thought it is ridiculous and there must be some divine reason for him for keep insisting Jane’s death as a result of series of unfortunate event. The reasons like to save Jane’s dignity or something. I thought like that because I’ve seen a part of myself in David and wanted to find out how he could move on despite all those heart-breaking tragedies before his path. I pictured him like a passionate but simple guy who doesn't know anything but fish and trying to endure life no matter what difficulty slaps him. Therefore finding out he has crossed the line and has done something horrific was more than a disappointment. Well, starting from Jane’s death the author reveals that he was a strong advocate for eugenics and put numerous people’s lives in misery without feeling guilty. It’s quite ironic that the reason he opposed to war was eugenics which made him hard to bear the idea of losing lives of superior species. Reaching the end, what I found is that everything in this world so tangled that it’s really hard to tell what’s wrong and what’s right.

What I wanted get from this book was guidance for living a worthy life. Like how I can do my best to make my life meaningful and how to endure the meaninglessness of it at the same time. I kind of know that there’s no such thing as simple answer for living but still I cannot help but roaming around books after books to catch a little glimmer of a divine answer. 

Anyway, when it comes to the books related to that subject, the answers quite similar. Reach for happiness and do your best to get it. Specific expression depicting this is different from books to books but what they are saying is quite alike. And here, this book’s answer could be like this: Don’t put yourself in the box. Get out of the box and you may find your way.

After experiencing several obstacles in life, I kind of realized that even if I see lots of doors in my way, not every door will open. In fact only few could I grab and I should try extra hard to get that door open. For this reason, sometimes or most of the times I don’t even try touching the door expecting it is already locked-closed. But the author says at least we should keep trying because behind such door the great happiness that you’ve never imagined even in your good days may lie waiting for you to discover. 

This book was such a solace for me since it reminds me of that I’m not the only person who are wandering around this bleak labyrinth of life. Realizing this simple fact always gives me kind of odd comfort.

Things that make Gatsby Great

When I first read this book before, though I strongly related to Gatsby, I took this story just as one of those common tragic romance. But reading this once again after several years, I became doubt about Gatsby’s ardent love toward Daisy. It seems like he loved her enormous wealth that she inherited rather than Daisy herself. In the book, there’s a sentence that Gatsby’s saying that Daisy’s voice is full of money and Carraway agrees with it. Carraway too lured by her voice and keep saying in the narrative that there’s a special power in her voice which drags people and I think that power comes from her wealth. It’s not just a normal wealth but an enormous wealth. As it described in the novel that Daisy’s family is very opulent in Louisville, the life of Daisy probably was the one that Gatsby eagerly wanted since he was young. When he first saw Daisy, I guess he saw his ideal dream in her daily life and that probably made him instantly fall in love with her irresistibly.

Though pathetic tragedy has begun when he decided to rewind time and achieve his dream, I can’t think of better life of Gatsby than his death. Though his means may not be desirable, his pure commitment to his dream made him Great. Were it not for Gatsby’s pure commitment to his dream, the whole story would have been just a common tawdry affair. I feel sorry for Gatsby as I see myself in his behavior. Though I know I can’t turn back time, there were times that I wanted to re do with my newly achieved qualities. But as Carraway mentioned at the very last page of the book, things are already receded to the past and only lingered eagerness makes us stretch our hands toward those dreams until we reach our end. 

개쓰레기 같은 책

개쓰레기 같은 책

이 책을 읽지 마시오. 이 책을 읽는데 들어가는 당신의 수명이 아깝다. 

허수아비 때리기와 체리피킹이 난무하는 데다가 논리적인 척 온갖 궤변을 줄줄 늘어놓는데, 이 책을 동생이 추천했다는 사실만 아니었다면 애초에 빌리지도 않았을 것이다. 

요즘 환경관련 서적을 읽고 있다고 하니, 이 저자의 저서를 읽어보라며 추천하던 20대중반 대학생 남동생... 읽으면서 너무 어이없어서 너 진심으로 이거를 믿냐니까, 자기는 책을 읽어본 적 없고 그저 환경분야의 권위자 이길래 추천했다고 하는데 대체; 평소에 얘는 채식주의자를 비난하고 환경문제에 지입으로 관심없다고 했는데, 그런 주제에 그럼 인터넷에서 몇 줄 끄적 읽고 '아 지구 온난화는 과대포장 되어있고 소위 환경론자들의 정치놀음이네. 깨어있는 난 놀아나지 않겠어! 환경오염 왜 신경써? 채식 왜해? 나는 이대로 죄책감 없이 살거야. 우매한 인간들 ㅉㅉ' 이따위로 생각하고 있는 건 아닐지 심히 우려된다... 

이 책이 이미 10년도 더 된 책이고 정신승리하던 저자는 지금와서 무슨 생각을 할지 궁금하지만(솔직히 안궁금하다) 일단 개소리가 난무하는 책에 내가 너무 열받으니까 여기에라도 써야겠다.

1. 비외른은 온난화로 인해 오히려 북쪽 지방에서는 살기 좋은 기후가 될거라는 개소리를 늘어놓는다. 그러면서 온난화 덕분에 한파로 죽는 사람들이 줄어든 것엔 왜 주목하지 않냐며 울분을 토하는데 이새끼가 환경론자가 맞는지 의심스러운 구절이다. 물론 이새기의 말대로 온난화가 진행되면 북쪽 지역의 추운 지역도 같이 더워지면서 일부는 사람이 살기 최적의 온도에 도달할 것이다. 문제는 그런 지역이 매우 일부일 것이란 사실이다. 북쪽 땅이 따뜻해지는 만큼 적도와 중위도 지역은 불타오를 것이고 적도 주위를 시작으로 상당부분 사람이 살기 힘겨운 최고 온도를 찍게 될 것이라는 아주 간단한 상상을 이새기는 왜 하지 못하는가? (아, 심지어 이놈은 지구 온난화로 인해 적도지방은 별로 안뜨거워지고 고위도 지역만 기온이 오를 거라는 해괴한 주장도 한다. 대체 근거가 뭔지?)

 그리고 이놈은 지구 온도가 오르는 게 먼 대수냐는 태도를 취하는데 그 멍청함에 정말 탄복할지경이다. 지구의 평균온도가 오른다는 뜻은 평균의 함정으로 그만큼 여름은 더 더워지고 겨울은 더 추워진다는 걸 뜻한다. 하긴 이건 이미 온난화가 진행되어 기후 위기를 목도하고 있는 지금 시기의 상식이지만 대략 10여년 전의 우매한 비외른이 이 사실을 알기를 기대하기란...애초에 기대할 걸 기대해야지. 그는 개소리로 가득한 이 책을 부끄러운 줄 모르고 출판했을 정도로 멍청하다는 사실을 잊으면 안된다.

2. 두번째로 경악스러운 부분. <날씨가 더워진다_단편적인 이야기> 챕터에서 그는 도시 열섬효과를 얘기하면서 지난 반세기동안 2.6도 내지는 그것보다 더 기온상승이 했는데도 도시가 버텨냈으므로 앞으로 2.6도 더 오른다고 해서 도시시스템이 붕괴하지 않을것이란 놀라운 주장을 한다. 이놈이 학자가 맞는지 의심스러운 부분이다. 지구상 모든 생명체와 마찬가지로 인간이 살아가는데 적정온도 라는 게 있다. 그 적정온도의 폭이란 매우 좁아서 그 폭을 벗어나면 인간은 생명을 유지하기가 어려운데 지금으로 보자면 지구 온도는 그 적정온도의 꼭대기에 다다르고 일부 넘나드는 경우가 자주 발생하고 있다. 이 상황에서 여태 상승폭을 견뎌왔으므로 앞으로도 견딜 수 있다는 말은 어불성설이다. 비외른은 인간이 여태까지 꾸준한 기온상승속에서 살아왔으니 50도의 폭염 속에서도 무리없이 살 수 있다고 생각하는 모양이다. 

3. 또한 비외른은 미래의 새로 나타날 기술에 거의 종교 수준의 믿음을 보이는데 그래... 그 심정을 이해하지 못하는 바는 아니나 이는 전형적인 미래는 무조건 진보한다는 안일한 사고방식에 따른 것으로 보인다..

4. 비외른은 경제를 들먹이면서 복잡하고 불투명한 지구온난화를 줄이는 대신 당면한 문제-기아, 말라리아 등-을 해결하자고 하는데 저자의 말대로 목전에 닥친 문제만 해결하다보면 당장이야 효과를 보겠지만 지구온난화-기후 위기가 불러오는 여러 폭염, 병충해, 가뭄 등의 부작용으로 세계가 더 극심한 빈곤과 고통에 휘말릴 것은 불보듯 뻔한 일이다. 마치 죽기전 마지막 발광을 하듯이 우리의 문명은 잠깐 자본주의의 꽃을 피우고 영영 불길 속에 사라질 것이다. 

5. 대체로 그의 비상식적이고 빡침을 불러오는 멍청함은 전체적인 흐름을 보지 못하고 지엽적인 부분에만 집중하는데 따른 것들이다. 하긴 이 책이 10년도 더 전에 나왔다는 사실을 감안해보면 그때에는 나름 설득력 있어 보였을지도 모르겠다. 하지만 이 책으로 인해 비외른은 스스로가 멍청하고 우매하다는 사실을 확실히 보여주었을 뿐이다. 범람하는 정보 속에서 정확히 필요한 것을 찾아내고 그것을 바탕으로 미래를 내다보는 혜안은 아무에게나 주어지는 것이 아니다. 그리고 비외른은 지가 그런 혜안을 가지고 있다고 착각하는 수많은 멍청이들 중 하나 였던 것이다.

6. 반박하다 지쳐 후루룩 책을 읽다보니 왜 비외른이 왜그렇게 필사적으로 환경오염에 대한 통념을 비판하려 했는지 알겠다. 그의 모든 것은 결국 교토의정서를 비판하기 위함이었던 것이다! 이건 마치 <지구를 위한다는 착각>에서 셸렌버거가 원자력 찬양을 위해 온갖 비논리를 끌어오면서까지 허수아비때리기와 체리피킹을 했던 것과 같달까. 아니 시기적으로 비외른이 먼저구나. 셸렌버거야, 비외른한테서 배워왔니?

 어ㅉㅣ되었든 교토의정서에 대한 저자의 반감은 책 전반에 아주 강렬하게 흐르고 있는데 그는 4장에서 실효성 없는 교토의정서를 이행하느니 연구개발에 막대한 투자를 하고 맞닥뜨린 문제 해결에 집중해야 한다고 주장한다. 이건 타당한 주장이다. 문제는 그가 자신의 주장을 관철시키기 위해 앞 장에서 너무 개논리를 펼쳐놓았다는 것이다. 이 마지막 주장을 보기 위해 내가 오늘 하루 이 책을 붙들고 있었구나... 

온갖 빡치는 개소리에도 불구하고 이 책을 꼭 읽어야겠다 싶으면 마지막 맺음말만 보라. 그것으로 충분하다.
