래리 고닉

무난하게 읽을 만하였으나, 간간이 느꼈던 번역에 대한 아쉬움 때문에 별점을 하나 깎는다. 키워드에는 원어를 붙여 금방 알아챌 수 있게 배려해주셨어도 좋았을 것 같다.

성글게 추린 이 한 권에서 미국인은 미국사에서 어떤 대목을 중요하게 생각하는지 엿볼 수 있다. 미국의 본격적 발전과 팽창이 남북전쟁(1861~1865) 이후부터 시작되었다는 것을 고려할 때, 새삼 미국 역사가 짧다는 것을 느낀다. 그럼에도 그 짧은 역사만큼은 충실하게 기록하고 시시콜콜한 자료들을 살뜰히 보존해 두었다는 것이 놀랍고 부럽다. 미국사 박물관 같은 데를 가보면 별의별 물건들을 모아뒀는데, 땅이 넓고 널찍널찍한 집에 살다 보니 뭘 잘 버리지도 않는 것 같다. 기록하여 그로부터 배우지 못한다면 긴긴 역사가 다 무슨 소용이랴.

한국에는 2018년에야 번역, 소개되었지만, 책은 1991년 걸프 전쟁 정도까지만을 다루고 끝이 난다.


하나 둘 사다 보니 집에도 책이 몇 권 생겼는데, 여하간 래리 고닉은 흥미로운 인물이다.

그나저나 아마존 킨들에 비하여 크레마는 너무나 불편하고 아쉬운 점이 많다. eBook 가격도 비싸고... 책을 설렁설렁 읽을 수는 있어도 자료로 활용하는 데 필요한 기능은 부족하다. 아마도 판권 문제가 있었겠지만 이 책은 만화이고, PDF 버전이라 더 불편했다. 밑줄 긋기가 너무 힘들어 포기할 수밖에 없었다.

다작하시는 것 같은데... 문장이... ㅠㅠ 안내용 자료모음으로서는 몰라도, 단행본으로서는 급히 낸 티가 많이 난다. 미국 특허법을 진짜 봐야 할 사람들은 어차피 영문으로 보겠지만, 선두권과 격차는 여전한데 고립된 개인이 각개 약진하여야 하는 우리의 지식 생산, 보급 현실이 그저 안타깝다.
