뉴베리 상이란?





미국 내에서 전년도에 출간된 어린이 책 가운데 가장 뛰어난 공헌을 한 작가에게 수여하는 상입니다. 미국 도서관 협회가 주관하며, 수상 작가는 미국 국민이어야 하고 미국에 거주하는 사람이어야 한다는 규정이 있습니다.

독서에 대한 어린이들의 관심을 높이고, 아동문학가들의 창작욕을 북돋우기 위해 제정된 상으로 미국에서 가장 오래된 아동문학상입니다. 1921년 6월 21일 미국도서관협회 아동문학분과회의에서 멜쳐(Frederic G. Melcher)가 처음 제안하였고, 이듬해부터 시상하기 시작했습니다.

수상자에게 메달을 수여하기 때문에 뉴베리상보다는 '뉴베리 메달'로 더 알려져 있고, 이름은 18세기 영국의 서적상인 뉴베리(John Newbery)에서 유래한 것으로 그를 기리기 위해 제정된 상입니다.

대상은 소설, 시집, 논픽션 등이며, 시상식은 매년 초에 개최됩니다. 역시 멜쳐가 제안해 1937년부터 한 해동안 출판된 가장 훌륭한 어린이 그림책을 대상으로 매년 시상하는 '칼데콧상(Caldecott Award)과 함께 미국의 가장 권위 있는 아동문학상입니다.
