곰브리치는 서양미술사 개론서의 저자로 유명하다. 이 책은 그가 박사학위를 받은 뒤 일자리를 구하지 못하던 중 급하게 쓰게 된 첫 작품이다.
이 책은 어린이를 위한 역사책이라고 되어 있는데 어휘 수준을 보면 원어민이라도 초등학교 고학년쯤은 되어야 완전히 이해하지 않을까 싶다. 다 이해하지 못하더라도 자기 전에 읽어주는 용도로는 더 어린 아이들에게도 괜찮을 것 같다. 친구의 표현에 따르면 글을 정말 '예쁘게' 써서 소리내어 읽기에 참 좋다.
보통 역사책과 다른 점은 인물과 연도를 많이 명기하지 않았다는 점이다. 역사책을 읽다 보면 나오는 사람 이름과 명기된 연도를 다 기억해야만 할 것 같은데, 주요 인물과 주요 연도가 적어 부담이 덜했고 저자의 관점에서 서양 역사의 핵심 인물이 누구이고 핵심 사건이 무엇인지를 알게 되었다.
역사상 중요한 사건들의 줄거리를 옛날 이야기처럼 전달하면서 어떤 역사적 사건이 왜 일어났는지에 대한 설명도 결들인다. 어른 또는 역사학자의 입장에서 보면 너무 단순하고 딱 맞아떨어져서 좋지 않겠지만 적어도 아동을 대상으로 한 설명 능력만은 높이 산다. 예를 들어 산업혁명이 일어나 노동자의 임금이 급감한 정황을 다음 문단처럼 구체적인 일화를 통해 이해하기 쉽게 설명한다.
But the worst thing was this: the city's hundred weavers were now out of work and would starve, because one machine was doing their work for them. And naturally, rather than see his family starve a person will do anything. Even work for a pittance as long as it means he has a job to keep body and soul together. And the third, seeing his last chance of survival about to disappear, would say: 'I'll see if I can manage on half a loaf.' Four others then said: 'So will we!' 'Right!' said the factory owner. 'I'll take you five. How many hours can you work in a day?' 'Ten hours,' said the first. 'Twelve,' said the second, seeing the job slipping from his grasp. 'I can do sixteen,' cried the third, for his life depended on it. 'Fine,' said the factory owner, 'I'll take you. But who'll look after the machine while you're asleep? My machine doesn't sleep!' 'I'll get my little brother to do it - he's eight years old,' replied the luckless weaver. 'And what shall I give him?' 'A few pennies will do, to buy him a bit of bread and butter.' And even then the factory owner might reply: 'He can have the bread, but we'll see about the butter.' And this was how business was done. The remaining ninety-five weavers were left to starve, or find another factory owner prepared to take them on.

문장이 쉬운 편이기에 역사를 좋아하는 사람들이 영어 공부삼아 읽기에도 좋다.
