작곡가 작품번호

작품번호의 유래

보통 클래식 음악에는 Op.라는 작품번호가 붙는다. 이는 '작품'을 의미하는 라틴어 Opus의 약자이다. 그러나 몇몇 작곡가들의 작품 앞에는 위대한 작곡가들의 수많은 작품을 분류, 확인하여 정리한 음악학자들의 이니셜을 따거나, 작곡가의 이름에서 유래한 고유의 작품 번호가 붙는다. Op.와 고유의 작품번호를 같이 쓰는 경우도 있고, 같은 곡이라도 분류한 사람에 따라 다른 작품번호를 쓰는 경우도 있다.

음악 작품에 따르는 번호는 크게 두가지가 있다.

하나는 장르별 일련번호이고 또 하나는 그 작곡가의 모든 작품에 순차적으로 붙이는 작품번호 오퍼스(Opus, Op.)입니다. 이해를 돕기 위해 여러분이 작곡가라고 가정해 보지요. 여러분이 처음 작곡한 작품은 피아노곡인 발라드였습니다. 이 곡은 이후에 작곡했을 발라드를 포함해서 발라드 중의 1번이지요. 동시에 여러분의 모든 작품 중에서도 가장 먼저 작곡된 것이니 작품번호 1 입니다. 두번째로 작곡한 것은 교향곡이었다고 하지요. 이는 마찬가지로 교향곡 1번 이면서 전체적으로 보아 작품번호 2가 됩니다. 세번째로 다시 발라드를 작곡했다고 하지요. 이제 이곡은 여러분 아무개의 '발라드 2번 작품번호 3' 이라고 불리 울 것입니다. 따라서 베토벤의 교향곡 6번, 작품 68 이라고 했을 때 우리는 이 곡이 베토벤이 여섯번째로 작곡한 교향곡이며, 그의 모든 작품 중에서는 68번째로 작곡된 것임을 알수 있습니다. 앞의 번호에는 넘버(No.독어로는 Nr.), 뒤의 번호에는 오퍼스(Opus,Op.)라는 단어를 씁니다. 오퍼스는 라틴어이며, '오퍼스 인 무지카(Opus in Musica)', 즉 '음악작품' 에서 온 용어입니다. 그런데 예외없는 규칙은 없다고 오퍼스 대신 다른 용어를 쓰는 작곡자 들이 몇 있습니다.

Opus는 출판 순서대로

물론 베토벤의 후기 현악 4중주들은 작품번호와 작곡순서가 일치하지 않습니다. 그런데도 작품 번호가 일반적으로 통용되는 이유는, 굳이 다른 일련 번호를 만들지 않아도 되며 (다른 번호를 만든다면 이에 익숙해지는 데 상당히 시간이 필요하죠) 대체로 출판 순서와 작곡 순서가 잘 맞아, 가끔 역전된 것이 있더라도 '대세에 지장을 줄 정도로' 심각한 것은 아니라는 이유 때문에 아직 Opus 번호가 통용됩니다. 물론 초기 작품들이 나중에 출판되어 Op.103같은 번호를 달고 나오기도 하는데, 중요한 작품들의 경우는 대강 순서가 맞습니다. 이런 작품을 소개할 때는 물론 몇년에 작곡되었다고 단서를 달아야지요. 슈베르트 같은 경우에는 절대로 Opus를 믿을 수가 없습니다만, 베토벤은 꽤쓸만 합니다. 단 중요하지 않다고 베토벤이 생각한 작품의 경우는 Opus 대신 WoO(Werke ohne opus, 작품 번호 없는 작품)를 달고 출판되었기 때문에, 번호가 2중으로 붙는 문제점은 있지요. 제 기억으로는 아마 브람스는 거의 Opus가 작곡 순서와 일치하는 것으로 압니다.

바흐, Johann Sebastian Bach

BWV : Bach가 죽은지 200년이 되던 해인 1950년, 독일의 볼프강 슈미더 (Wolfgang Schmieder: 1901~ )가 Bach의 작품들을 정리한 목록을 출판했다. 그의 목록에는 '바흐의 작품 목록'이라는 뜻의 독일어 'Bach - Werke - Verzeichnis'의 이니셜을 따 BWV라는 작품 번호가 붙었다. BWV는 총 1120개의 Bach 작품에 붙어있다.

Anh. : "Anhang(추가, 혹은 추가의 의미)"의 약어로 작품목록 작성 후에 추가한 작품에 붙여진 번호를 말한다.

모차르트, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

K : 모차르트의 작품에 가장 빈번히 사용되는 K는 오스트리아의 모차르트 연구가 루드비히 폰 쾨헬(Kochel : 1780~1677)의 이니셜을 딴 것이다. 그는 총 626곡의 모차르트 작품에 번호를 매겼다. K는 종종 '쾨헬 작품 목록'이라는 의미의 Kochel - Verzeichnis의 이니셜을 따서 'KV'로 표기되기도 한다.

슈베르트, Franz Peter Schubert

D : 슈베르트에 관한 권위자인 오토 에리히 도이치(Deutsch : 1883~1967)의 이름을 따서 붙여지는 번호. 오스트리아의 음악 문헌학자이며 전기 작가인 도이치는 연대기적인 순서로 총 998개의 슈베르트 작품에 번호를 매겼다. 슈베르트의 작품은 작품번호가 주어져 있는 것이 아주 적고, 그것도 연대순과 일치하지 않기 때문에 현재에는 O.E.도이치(Otto Deutsch)가 전작품을 연대순으로 정리한 일련번호인 도이치번호사용(또는 작품번호 병용)이 일반화되어 있다(일반적으로 작품Op 번호 대신에 그의 이름인 '도이취'D 번호로 표기된다). 도이치의 작품목록에 의하면 슈베르트의 전작품은 998곡이며, 그 중 가곡은 630여 곡이다.

스카를라티, Domenico Scarlatti

K : 1953년, 600여곡이 넘는 스카를라티의 건반 악기 소나타를 정리한 카탈로그가 미국의 하프시코드 연주자 랄프 커크패트릭 (Kirkpatrick : 1911~ ? )에 의해 출판되었다. 모짜르트의 쾨헬번호 (K)와 같이 K로 표기되며, 스카를라티 작품 번호로는 K 이외에 아래의 'Longo'도 쓰인다.

L : 알렉산드로 롱고(Longo : 1864~1945)는 이탈리아 작곡가이자 피아니스트였다. 스카를라티에 관심이 깊었던 그는 1892년 나폴리에 스카를라티 협회를 설립하고, 스카를라티의 작품 목록을 만들었다. 오늘날 스카를라티의 작품에는 K와 L을 함께 써주는 경우가 많다.

하이든, Franz Joseph Haydn

Hob : 하이든의 작품에는 통상적으로 Hob이라는 번호가 붙는다. 이는 네덜란드의 안토니 판 호보켄 (Hoboken ; 1887~?)이 1957년과 1971년 하이든의 음악을 정리하여 낸 두 권의 카탈로그에서 유래한 것이다. 1765년 이후 및 1804년부터 1805년에 걸쳐서 하이든은 자기 작품의 두 개의 목록을 만들었다(또는 만들게 했다). 이 작품목록은 귀중한 자료이지만 불완전한 것이었다. 호보켄의 작품목록은 오늘날에는 이미 그 미흡함이 지적되고 있다. 이 목록은 작품을 장르별로 나누고 우선 각 장르에 각각 로마숫자(I, II, III)로 번호를 붙였다. 그리고 각 장르마다 작품을 연대순으로 아라비아 숫자를 붙여 분류하기로 했다. 이하의 작품 리스트는 호보켄의 로마 숫자에 의한 그룹 분류, 그리고 일반적으로는 아라비아 숫자를 채택했다. 그러나 때로는 이 아라비아 숫자를 보다 올바른 연대순으로 다시 배열하고 있다.

헨델, George Frideric Handel

HWV : 헨델의 작품에는 통상적으로 HWV이라는 번호가 붙는다. 헨델의 작품목록(Handel Werk Verzeichnis)이라는 독일어의 이니셜을 따 HWV라는 작품 번호가 붙었다

비발디, Antonio Vivaldi

R : 1977년 프랑스의 피터 리옹(Ryon)은 비발디의 방대한 작품들을 정리하여 목록을 출판했다. 그 전에도 마르크 핀케를(P)이나 안토니오 파나(F)에 의한 목록이 출판되었으나, 리옹의 목록이 가장 포괄적이며, 많이 쓰인다. R은 리옹번호(Ryon Verzeichnis)의 약자로 'RV'라고 하기도 한다.

드뷔시, Claude Achille Debussy

L : 프랑스의 음악학자이며 드뷔시 연구가인 프랑수아 르쉬르(Francois Lesure)의 약자이다.

드보르자크, Anton Dvork

B : 드보르자크의 작품에 쓰이며, 음악학자인 버그 하우저가 만든 주제별색인(Burghauser Thematic Catalogue)의 약자이다. 버그 하우저는 체코의 민속음악에 많은 관심을 기울였으며 1960년 그가 출간한 안 톤 드보르자크의 주제별 색인 「Tematicky Katalog dila Antonina Dvoraka」는 드보르자크의 작품연구에 지대한 공헌을 하였다.

S : 드보르자크의 작품에 쓰이며 오타카 소우렉이 만든 주제별 색인(Sourek Thematic Catalogue)의 약자로 작품이 쓰인 순서를 기준으로 분류한 것이다. 오타카 소우렉은 본래 엔지니어로 드보르작의 작품에 관심을 기울여 그의 전기를 쓰고 그에 관한 연대별 색인을 완성하기도 하였다.

쉬츠, Heinrich Schutz

SWV : 쉬츠(Heinrich Schutz)의 작품을 미팅거가 엮은 쉬츠 작품목록(Schutz-Werke-Verzeichnis)의 약자이다. 쉬츠(1581∼1672)는 17세기 독일을 대표하는 프로테스탄트 교회 음악가로 유명하다.

WoO : 독일어의 <작품 번호가 없는 작품 (Werke ohne Opuszahl)>의 약자이다. 이것은 킨스키와 할름, 두 사 람의 학자가 편집한 베토벤의 작품 목록 중에서 작품 번호가 없는 작품(당시 출판이 되지 않았거나 사후에 발견된 작품)을 정리할 때 편의상 붙인 것으로, 현재는 베토벤의 작품 번호가 없는 작품의 정리 번호에는 거의 반드시라고 해도 좋을 정도로 이 약호가 사용되고 있다.
