불교의 신묘장구대다라니
한참 불경에 미쳐 지낸 적이 있다. 지금은 기독교인지만, 어릴적부터 불교가 좋아 불경을 공부 했다. 한 일년쯤 하고니 손을 놓았다. 아무래도 나와 맞지 않다는 것보다는, 불경이 가진 원의적 의미가 그리 달갑지 않았기 때문이다.
불교의 역사도 기독교의 역사와 그리 다르지 않다. 초기 불경에 속하는 아함경 종류는 원색적이며, 생활에 깊이 관련된 내용이다. 후대에 편집되고 추가되는 불경은 점차 사변화화되고 철학적이 된다.
그리고 이책, 신묘장구댜다라니의 경우는 불경이 아니라 힌드교의 경전이다. 그럼에도 불경처럼 여겨지고 있다. 지금도 이것을 모르고 불경처럼 여기는 이들이 많다. 신묘장구대다라니(神妙章句大陀羅尼)는 천수경에 안에 있으며 '천수경 다라니'로 불린다.
신묘장구대다라니의 내용은 힌드교 신인 비슈누아 시바를 찬양한 것이다. 다라니경은 한국에서는 사본을 집에 걸어 놓으면 좋은일이 생긴다했고, 일본은 사람들은 악귀를 쫒아 준다고 믿는다. Lokesh Chandra (1988)는 다라니가 시바(Nilakantha)의 이야기를 담고 있다고 발표한다.

Adoration to Avalokiteśvara the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva who is the great compassionate one!
Om, to the one who performs a leap beyond all fears!
Having adored him, may I enter into the heart of the blue-necked one known as the noble adorable Avalokiteśvara! It means the completing of all meaning, it is pure, it is that which makes all beings victorious and cleanses the path of existence.
Thus:
Om , the seer, the world-transcending one!
O Hari the Mahābodhisattva!
All, all!
Defilement, defilement!
The earth, the earth!
It is the heart.
Do, do the work!
Hold fast, hold fast! O great victor!
Hold on, hold on! I hold on.
To Indra the creator!
Move, move, my defilement-free seal!
Come, come!

A joy springs up in me!
Speak, speak! Directing!
