듣는 혹은 읽는 순간 새겨져서 세월이 지나도 지워지지 않으며
뜬금없이 무슨 판결처럼 튀어나오는 말. 이 구절도 그런 구절이었고
이걸 어디서 읽었는지 혹은 들었는지는 알 수 없겠지... 라고 생각하다
혹시 모르니 구글 검색 해보았다.
조지 칼린이 Life is worth losing. 이 공연에서 했던 말인가 보았다.
그러고 보니 십년 전쯤 칼린이 영웅이던 시절이 있었다. 이것저것 찾아보고 기록도 꽤 열심히 남김. 이런 걸 써두기도 했다.
칼린만이, 진정 "제한 무"의 코미디. 또, 윤리적이다. 말콤 헤이던가, 유럽에서 유태인 박해의 역사를 쓰면서, 서문에서 이런 말 한다. "극히 희귀하게, 타고 나기를 그렇게 타고 났다고 볼 수밖에 없을 고귀한 품성의 사람들을 제외하면, 어느 시대 어느 곳에서나 대부분 사람들은 주류가 세우는 편견(제도화된 잔인함)들을 나눠 갖고 실행하게 된다. 인종 편견, 당연히 예외 아니다." 십년 전이었다면, "극히 희귀"까진 아니지 않나? 는 생각부터 들었을지 모르겠는데, 지금은 ... 저런 진실한 말을 서문에서 하는 그의 용기에 찬탄을 보내고 싶다는 반응. 정말이다. 미국 학자가 저런 말 하는 거, 별별 오만가지 오해를 무릅쓸 각오를 하고 해야 하는 말이니, 용기 필요했을 것이다. 여튼 말콤 헤이의 저런 말이 생각나게끔, 칼린의 유머와 농담엔 조금도 '제도화된 잔인함'의 흔적조차 없다. 그에게서 엄청난 영향 받았다는 빌 마어와 비교하면 더더욱. 빌 마어... 볼수록, 수상쩍은 패권주의. 와일드의 말대로 There is no sin, except stupidity. '멍청한' 인간만이 칼린의 공격 대상. 이 정도의 윤리, 이걸 일관되게 그리고 강력하게 갖는다는게 얼마나 어려운가 이젠 잘 아니까....
이런 엄청난 말들 속에서 등장했던 구절이었다:

And let me ask you this... this is a moral question, not rhetorical, I'm looking for the answer: what is the moral difference between cuttin' off one guy's head, or two, or three, or five, or ten - and dropping a big bomb on a hospital and killing a whole bunch of sick kids? Has anybody in authority given you an explanation of the difference? Now, in case you're wondering why I have a certain interest, or fascination let's call it, with torture and beheadings and all of those things I have mentioned, is because each of these items reminds me in life over and over again what beasts we human beings really are. When you get right down to it, human beings are nothing more than ordinary jungle beasts. Savages. No different from the Cro Magnon people who lived twenty five thousand years ago. No different. Our DNA hasn't changed substantially in a hundred thousand years. We're still operating out of the lower brain. The reptilian brain. Fight or flight. Kill or be killed. We like to think we've evolved and advanced because we can build a computer, fly an airplane, travel underwater, we can write a sonnet, paint a painting, compose an opera. But you know something? We're barely out of the jungle on this planet. Barely out of the fucking jungle. What we are, is semi-civilized beasts, with baseball caps and automatic weapons.

괄호 채우기. 이것도 심지어 수업에서도; 해볼 수 있는 일. 인간혐오가 우리의 과제, 사명. 이런 답이 나오더라도. 나오겠지만.
