이 책에 '헐버트 박사'의 이야기가 나온다.

   
 

 헐버트 박사는 고종 황제를 대변하여조선 독립을 위해 활동했다. 그는 개인적으ㅗ 활동했는데 성공하지 못했었다.1905년 노일 전쟁 결과로 포츠머드(Portsmouth)에서 휴전 조약이 서명되기 전에 미국의 루즈벨트 대통령에게 조선으 위해 청원했다.

 
   

그래서 찾아보니 '한국의 은인', '고종이 보낸 편지', '헐버트 기념 사업' 등 많은 자료를 찾을 수 있었다.

이 책에서는 윤치호가 셔우드 홀 닥터의 어머니의 친한 기독교인으로 나온다. 이름이 익숙하여 찾아보니 기독교인이었고 친일로 돌아선 인물로 나온다.

알라딘에 '윤치호'에 대한 책이 있다. 읽으면 한국의 근대사에 대해서 공부할 수 있을 것 같다.

1890년대의 우리나라의 모습을 외국의 선교사님의 눈을 통해 보는 것이 새롭다. 그래서 사진을 찾아 보았는데 책에서 나온 내용의 사진들이 있었다. 옛날 한국의 모습 - 조선의 모습은 어땠을까? 옛날에는 어떻게 살았을까? 궁금하고 새롭고 재미있다. 그 당시는 어떻게 살았을까? 영화를 보듯 들어가 보고 싶다.
