"팝페라"는 팝(pop)과 오페라(opera)의 합성어로, 1997년 미국의 《워싱턴 포스트》지에서 처음 사용한 말이다. 흔히 유명한 오페라에 대중적인 팝 스타일을 가미해 부름으로써 누구나 편안하게 들을 수 있는 노래들을 일컫는다. 1980년대부터 시작된 크로스오버 음악의 한 줄기라고 할 수 있으나, 최근에는 고유한 장르로 자리를 잡아가고 있으며, 유럽과 일본에서는 이미 일상적인 용어로 자리를 잡았다. 기존의 오페라를 자신의 음역에 맞추어 적절히 편곡해 부르는 것이 일반적이나, 요즘은 팝 스타일로 편곡하여 팝과 오페라의 중간 형태인 새로운 노래로 작곡해 부르기도 한다. 흔히 팝페라의 선두주자 하면 '사라브라이트만'을 떠올릴것이다.그녀의 대를 잇는 팝페라의 차세대는 바로 영국 출신 이지 (Izzy).풍부한 성량과 부드럽고 안정된 목소리로 팝페라의 전형을 보여준다는 평을 듣고있는 그녀의 노래로,,오페라에 다소 부담을 가지시는 분들이 쉬엄쉬엄 그 쟝르에 접근할 수 있게 되길 바래본다.
