그럼에도 불구하고, 동료선생님중에서 위 글을 다음과 같이 [what it is now]와
[one of the most famous April Fool's Day hoaxes in Sweden]를 동격으로 볼 수 있지않느냐고 계속 강력하게 주장하시는 분이 있습니다.
Stensson lied to thousands of people to perform [what it is now] [one of the most famous April Fool's Day hoaxes in Sweden].

동격으로도 볼 수 있다는 의견에 제가 어떻게 대응해야 할지요?

제 생각으로는 동격이 되기 위해서는 둘 중 어느 하나를 빼도 문장이 완전하고,
어색하지 않아야 한다고 봅니다.
동격이라 생각하고
1) [what it is now]를 빼면
Stensson lied to thousands of people to perform [one of the most famous April Fool's Day hoaxes in Sweden]. 은 성립은 하지만 조금 어색하고,

2) [one of the most famous April Fool's Day hoaxes in Sweden].을 뺄 경우에는
Stensson lied to thousands of people to perform [what it is now].가 되어 말이 안되는 것 같습니다.

저의 설명이 맞는지요?

맞습니다. 동격이라고 주장하는 분에게는 그럼 'it'이 뭐냐고 물어 보세요. '대략 두루뭉실 it'이라든지 '전반적인 상황'이라든지 하는 궁색한 변명은 하지 말라고도 하세요.
고집을 피워서 영어가 된다면 얼마나 좋겠습니까? ㅎㅎㅎ.
