어렵고 불친절하고 누더기 같지만 가능성은 있어 개정이 시급한 책

- 해커스 TOEFL Reading iBT edition, 초판 4쇄, 2006. 8

서평자는 얼마 전 해커스 iBT Listening에 대해 칭찬하는 내용의 서평을 올린 바 있는데, 이어서 Reading이 어떤지 살펴보려고 한다. 종전 해커스 토플 CBT 시리즈에서도 Listening이 뛰어난데 비해 Reading은 질이 떨어졌는데, 이번 Reading 역시 많은 문제를 안고 있다.

결론을 미리 말하면 이 책은 해커스 리스닝만큼 '해커스'란 이름값을 하지 못한다는 것이다. 이 책 뿐만 아니라 Reading에 있어서 국내 책들은 아래와 같이 전반적으로 심각한 결점을 보여주므로, ETS에서 직접 발간한 Official Guide Book의 적은 문제량에 만족하지 못하는 독자들은 Longman, Delta’s Key 등 외국에서 발간된 책을 공부하라고 권하고 싶다. 단, 문제점은 이런 외국책들은 대개 Reading만 따로 다루지는 않고, Listening, Speaking, Writing이 통합되어 한 권으로 되어 있다는 점과 한국어 설명이나 해석이 없는 점일 것이나, 어차피 영어를 공부하는데, 영어로 된 책을 두려워해서는 앞뒤가 맞지 않는다.

우선 이 책은 누더기다. 이 책 출판사 홈페이지(www.gohackers.com)의 “해커스 Books - 해커스 북 자료실 – 오타정정노트보기”에서 이 초판 4쇄(가장 최근 쇄이다)의 정오표를 다운 받아보면 깜짝 놀랄 것이다 (독자 여러분을 위해 서평 말미에 퍼왔으니 참고하시도록). 틀려놓고도 정오표는 나 몰라라 하는 출판사도 많은지라 그래도 양심적이라고 생각해서는 안된다. 무려 4쇄를 거친 책의 정오표가 9페이지에 걸쳐 빡빡한데 단순한 typo가 아니라 내용 또는 문제를 고친 심각한 것들이 대부분이다. 어찌 그러고도 “오타”라고 할 수 있는지 참 대단하다는 생각이 든다. 통상, 시대가 바뀌고 새로운 연구동향이 축적되고 오류가 드러나 책의 내용을 개정하면 ‘판(edition)’이라 하고, typo등 가벼운 에러는‘쇄(print)’에서도 수정할 수 있는 것이다. 즉, 오류가 심각하여 개정판을 내야 마땅한데, 모르는 척 버티고 있는 것이라서, 1판을 산 독자의 입장에서는 “내 책값 돌리 도!”라고 외치고 싶은 심정이다. 여러분도 한번 고쳐보시면 왜 “누더기”라 했는지 공감이 갈 것이다.

둘째, 답에 대한 설명이 없으므로 불친절하다. 9개 chapter의 앞 부분 예제 설명의 6페이지 정도 분량과 비슷한 수준의 설명을 왜 나머지 부분에서는 하지 않는 걸까? 단지 직역 수준의 우리말 해석으로 출판사에서는 할 일을 다 한 것일까? 그러다 보니 Chapter 1의 Sentence Simplification에서는 숨은 그림이나 틀린 곳 찾기 수준의 애매한 선택지가 난무한다. 예를 들어보겠다.

위 문장을 다른 문장으로 paraphrase하는 문제이다.

(D) The manner of building planning was similar to the organization of the government.

답이 (D)가 될 수 있다고 생각하는 사람도 많을 것이다.

답은 (C)로 되어 있지만 왜 (A)는 아닐까?

미국 학생들을 대상으로 한 SAT에서는 비슷하지만 미묘한 차이가 있는 선택지들 사이의 최선의 답(best answer)을 요구하지만, 외국인을 대상으로 한 토플 시험에서는 이런 문제는 실제 시험에서는 나오지 않는다. 즉 틀린 곳 찾기 같이 한참 비교해서 겨우 알게 되는 문제가 아니라 정상적으로 이해했다면 금방 차이를 알 수 있는 선택지들이 나오는 것이다.

셋째, 단어 수준이 토플 수준을 벗어나고 있다. 서평자가 보기에는 SAT나 GRE 수준의 단어들이 빈출(頻出)한다. 다음 단어들을 보라.

salubrious, sedentary, bevy, incipient, unwonted, cogent, fetching, lubricious, presentiment, onerous, limpid, shoddy, impregnable, nascent, noisome, fickle, pluvial, respite, salutary, abject, disinter, tetchy, august(as an adjective), deport, peremptory, cuckold…

또한 iBT에서 달라지는 것 중의 하나로 학술적 전문 용어의 glossary(단어 해설)를 들 수 있는데 극히 빈약하다. 예를 들어 다음과 같은 단어들이 그것으로, 부록 해설집에 나올 것이 아니라 본문 지문 밑에 실음으로써 공부하는 사람들로 하여금 아하, 전문 용어니까 외울 필요는 없겠다라는 인식을 줄 수 있어야 하는 것이다.

gonad, milt, faience, phenetic, axon, bulrush, tarsal ...

넷째, TOEFL이 미국 대학의 강의 내용을 주로 다룬다고 하지만 그런 강의에서 사용되는 책의 내용이 거꾸로 TOEFL 수준에 맞추었으리라고는 생각할 수 없다. 따라서, TOEFL이든 미국 수능인 SAT든, 국내 수능시험에서든 일정한 수준과 목표를 가진 시험에서는, 1차 자료를 그대로 시험에 출제할 수는 없고, 가공할 수밖에 없는 것이며, 이 가공과정에서 저자의 역할이 중요한 것이다. 즉 시험 수준에 맞추어 내용을 정리하고 문장과 단어를 쉬운 내용으로 치환하기도 해서 문제를 출제하는 것이며(원저자가 틀리게 쓴 부분은 물론 고쳐야 한다), 이게 잘못되면 난이도가 어쩌니(사실 이 책의 지문 중 많은 것들이 TOEFL 수준으로는 너무 높다), 변별력이 어쩌니 하는 논란에 휩싸일 수밖에 없을뿐더러, 엉터리 영어가 등장하기도 한다.

예를 들어 보자.

enable이라는 동사는 “enable someone to do something”으로 쓰는 것이 보통이고 가끔 뒤에 목적어 하나만을 취하기는 한다. 하지만 위의 문장에서 간접목적어(messengers) + 직접목적어(swift passage) 두 개를 취한 소위 ‘4형식의 수여동사’가 되었다. 이게 가능한가? "가능하게 해주었다"는 우리말이 영향을 끼친 것으로 보인다.

주격 관계사 which의 선행사는 물론 codices(고서. 오래된 책)이다. 그럼 all은 무언데 관계사절의 주어 자리에 다시 나왔나? 이렇게 바꿔야 맞다. (이 문제는 전문 문법용어로는 '양화사 유동(quantifier floating)'이라고 한다.)

보시는 바와 같이 과거 사실에 대한 상상을 나타내는 가정법 과거완료 문장이다. 복합 시제가 될 가능성도 없다.

해석도 틀린다.

… adult parent males will excavate plate-sized nests in groups of 20 or 30, called “beddings”, … (p.384 해석: 성체 수컷 20-30 마리가 무리를 지어 “beddings”라고 불리는 접시만한 크기의 둥지를 판다.)

⇒ 어미 수컷들은 “beddings”라고 불리는 접시만한 크기의 둥지를 20-30개씩 무리지어 판다.

in groups of 20 or 30이라는 전치사구의 위치가 어느 말을 수식하는 지를 결정하는 법이다. 책 해석대로 하자면 adult parent males in groups of 20 or 30 will excavate라야 된다.

해석이 틀리니 답도 틀린다.

In the Aristotle tradition, dramatic performance evoked the purging fear and pity from the soul either by … (p.389 해석: 아리스토텔레스 시대의 전통에 따르면, 연극공연은 ---에 의해 영혼으로부터의 두려움과 동정심의 정화를 불러 일으켰다.)

⇒ 아리스토텔레스 시대의 전통에 따르면 연극 공연은 …에 의해 영혼으로부터 (영혼을) 정화시키는 역할을 하는 두려움과 동정심을 불러 일으켰다

the purging fear and pity에서 purging의 역할은? 현재분사로서 능동적 의미를 가진 형용사로 쓰였다. 이를 잘못 동명사로 보아 purge의 목적어가 fear and pity이고, ‘정화한다’는 뜻은 이를 ‘제거한다’로 간주해, 원래 정답인 (A)외에도 (B)… removing fear and pity from viewers, (D) Aristotelian dramas rid the soul of fear and pity 모두 정답이라고 했다. ‘정화력을 가진 두려움과 동정심을 만들어 내서 영혼을 정화한다’는 뜻을 ‘영혼으로부터 두려움과 동정심을 제거해서 영혼을 정화한다’는 엉터리 해석으로 바꿔 버렸다. 과연, 두려움도 동정심도 없는 영혼을 정화된 영혼이라 부를 수 있겠나?

자의적인 출제로 답이 틀린다.

Herbert C. Hoover is best remembered for his perceived inaction in responding to the Great Depression, as compared to the almost frenetic interventionism of his popular successor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, but this is lamentable because although Hoover was somewhat of a failure as President, outside of those four years of his life he was a very successful humanitarian.

위 문장을 바꿔서 요약해보는 문제인데, 정답을 (B), (C) 둘로 해놓았다. (B)는 원래 맞는 답이지만, (C)가 어째서 맞는 답일까?

(B) Hoover remains in people's memory as a failed President because of his insufficient response to the Great Depression, but actually he was a generous benefactor before and after his White House years.

(C) Even though he is most remembered for failing to react promptly to the Great Depression, Hoover was known for his charitable actions prior to and following his Presidency.

'but this is lamentable', 'but actually'라는 문구로부터 '그는 나쁜 점이 많이 알려져있지만 사실 좋은 면도 있다. 그런데 그 사실은 많이 알려져있지 않다'고 알 수 있는데, (C)에서는 '그의 좋은 면이 유명하다'(be known for = be famous for)고 하는데 어찌 답이 될 수 있겠는가?

(p.95 16번 지문 1번 문제)

미국의 공공기념조각의 역사에 관해 논한 글이며, 1번 문제는 이렇다. "According to the passage, which of the following is true of public monuments in the United States? (이 글에 따르면 미국의 공공기념물에 관해서 다음 중 어느 것이 맞느냐?)" 답은 "(A) 그들은 1700년대말 외국의 예술가들에 의해 디자인되었다." 하지만 문제에 "the earliest (public monuments)"라는 문구가 빠짐으로 해서 답이 없는 틀린 문제가 되었다. 책대로 하면 초창기가 아닌 1800년대, 남북전쟁기, 20세기 초반에 이르기까지의 모든 미국 공공기념물을 외국 예술가들이 디자인했다는 뜻밖에 되지 않는다.

단어 해설도 틀린다.

dewclaw 발굽 ⇒ 며느리발톱 (개 키워보신 분들은 알지요?). '발굽'은 'hoof(복수 hooves)이다.

represent for 나타내다. ⇒ represent 나타내다.

represent는 타동사인데 어찌 for가 붙었을까? 원래 문장을 보자.

The Bebop era represents (for many) the most significant period in jazz history.

보통 for many(많은 사람들에게)라는 부사구는 타동사와 목적어를 가르지 않고 문장 뒤에 오지만, 여기서는 represent의 목적어가 길어졌으므로 위치를 바꾼 것이다. 이를 represent for라고 해설해 놓은 엉터리.

entrainment 탑재 ⇒ 비말동반(飛沫同伴: 유체가 작은 물방울, 입자 따위를 부유시켜 운반함)

‘train에 싣다’라는 ‘탑재, 승차’와는 다른 그 동철이의어(heteronym)이다.

(p.94 위에서 셋째 줄, p.402 해석)

of a slimy lubricating mucous(점액질)

명사 '점액질'은 mucus이고 그 형용사인 '점액질의, 끈끈한'이란 단어가 mucous이다. 이런 실수는 p.62 위에서 7번째 줄 명사 descendants(후손) 자리에 형용사를 복수로 만든 엉터리 descendents를 쓴 곳이나, p.407 단어 해설 voluminous(풍부함, 볼륨감)에서 다신 발견된다. voluminous는 형용사이고 그 명사형은 voluminosity이다.

단어를 틀리니까 주어 동사 수의 일치도 틀려 버렸다. demographics라는 단어는 '인구통계학'이 아니다. 이 단어는 복수(plural)로 '인구분포자료, 인구통계'라는 뜻이며, 그 단수형 demographic은 그 중 일정한 계층을 나타내고, 이 단수형은 형용사형과 모양이 같다. 한편 '인구통계학'은 'demography'이다. 이걸 착각하니까 학문 이름은 복수형 형태를 취해도(예: politics, economics, statistics...), 단수 취급한다고 보고 were 자리에 was가 나온 것이다.

This allowed for more flexibility in the use and location of frescos for decorative purposes.

(이는 장식 용도의 프레스코의 이용과 장소에 융통성을 주었다.)

⇒ "~을 하게 해주었다/가능하게 했다"라는 영어 표현은 allow for가 아니라 타동사 allow를 주로 쓰고, 가끔 allow를 자동사로 쓰는 경우는 뒤에 전치사 of를 취하여 allow of이다. 한편 allow for라는 구동사(phrasal verb)의 뜻은 "~을 미리 고려/감안하다(= consider, take into account)'이다. 즉, 이렇게 쓰는 것이다.

The evidence allows (of) only one conclusion. (그 증거는 한 가지 결론만 가능하게 한다.)

You have to allow for expansion when planning a house. (집을 계획할 때는 확장을 고려해야만 해.)

위 페이지 외에도 p.256, p.264, p.265 모두 allow (of)를 쓸 자리에 모두 allow for를 써 놓았다.

4쇄 동안 출판사 자체로 발견하지 못한 오류가 이게 다가 아님에도, 앞서 말한 소위 “오타정정노트”를 덧붙이면 글이 너무 길어지기 때문에 그만 쓰겠지만, “해커스”라는 명성을 지키려면 빨리 개정판을 내야 할 것이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 별 두 개의 평점을 주는 것은 (1) 문제 패턴별로 잘 정리가 되어 있다, (2) 문제량이 어느 책보다 풍부하다는 점을 감안했기 때문이다. 즉, 빨리 이 모든 오류와 오타를 바로 잡는다면 좋은 Reading 교재가 될가능성은 있다는 말이다.

(ps. 최근 방송인 정모씨의 '마시멜로 이야기'에 이어 미술계에서도 한모씨의 대필(代筆)을 둘러싼 출판윤리 논란이 일고 있다. 이 책 어디에도 다른 사람 이름은 보이지 않고 저자가 홀로 쓴 형식을 취하고 있지만, 해설집의 번역과 단어 해설을 저자가 직접 했을 가능성은 아예 없고 - 이 정도는 영어출판계의 관행이라고 해도 오류에 대한 책임을 저자가 피해 갈 수는 없으며, 양심적인 저자는 번역이나 자료정리에 누구 도움을 받았다는 사실은 밝히는 법이다 -  나타난 오류로 보건대 본문조차도 어디까지 저자가 했는지 심히 의심이 가는데, 저자의 경력으로 보아 이렇게 많이 틀리리라고는 도저히 생각하기 힘들기 때문이다.)
