현대문학에서 나온 제임스 서버 단편선을 읽다가 구글창에다 제임스 서버를 넣어봤다. 트위터가 하나 떠서 보니, 서버와 카포티의 관계에 대한 이야기였다. 일단 제임스 서버가 누구냐면, 영화 《월터의 상상은 현실이 된다》의 원작인 「월터 미티의 이중생활」의 작가다. 오하이오 주 콜럼버스 출신이고(배우 마동석도….) 일곱 살 때 형제들과 빌헬름 텔 놀이를 하다 왼쪽 눈에 화살을 맞아 실명했다. 카투니스트이자 단편소설로 유명한 유머작가였다. 서른아홉을 지나면서 작가로서 명성을 떨치며 오른쪽 눈마저 시력을 잃지만 글쓰기는 계속했다.

After the editors had their decisions, Truman would pass them along to the artists, commiserate with those whose drawings had been rejected, and generally hold their hands. For Thurber, who was almost blind, he had to do a good bit more. It was his onerous duty to lead Thurber around, convey him to his assignations with one of the magazine´s secretaries, and even wait in her living room while the two of them consummated their loud passion in the bedroom. Their lovemaking, he later complained, sounded as romantic as squeals of hogs being butchered. When the noise had stopped, he would help Thurber on with his clothes. Once he put Thurber´s socks on wrong side out, and a sharp-eyed Mrs.Thurber, who had put them on correctly that morning, noticed the difference. The next morning the artist accused him of having made the mistake on purpose. ˝Thurber was the rudest, meanist man I´ve ever seen,˝ Truman said. ˝He was terrifically hostile―maybe because he was blind―and everybody hated him but that one secretary he was going to bed with. 트루먼 카포티가 〈뉴요커〉에서 사환으로 일할 적에 편집자들의 결정을 작가들에게 알려야 했는데 거절되는 작가들을 동정하여 보통은 위로해 주었다. 제임스 서버는 거의 맹인인지라 조금 더 친절을 베풀었는데 그를 정부의 집에 실어다주는 극한 직업이었다…. 심지어 그들이 침실에서 일을 치르는 동안 거실에서 기다려야 했고 끝나면 서버의 옷도 입혀주었다. 한번은 양말을 뒤집어 신겼는데, 매의 눈 서버 부인에게 딱 걸려 다음날 서버가 일부러 그랬지! 라면서 비난한다. 훗날(?) 카포티는 제임스 서버가 고약한 인간이라 사람들이 다 싫어했다고 정부도 못생겼었다고, 근데 서버는 눈이 안 보이니까 상관없었다고 디스 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
