죄많은 인생이 영광스러운 하나님 앞에 서는 것은 단순한 두려움을 넘어 절망스러운 일입니다. 하지만 그 절망 가운데 찾아오는 기쁨이야말로 참다운 기쁨입니다. "주께서 자신을 내게 나타내실 때 나는 내 안에, 주 앞에 꿇어 엎드려야만 하는 것들이 있다는 것을 알고기뻐합니다."

평소에 우리는 주님을 잘 안다고 생각합니다. 하지만 요한계시록에서 사도 요한이 경험했던 것처럼, 주님이 아주 생소한 모습으로 나타나실 때가 있습니다. 주님의 위엄 앞에 고개를 들 용기가 없습니다. 그러나 이렇게 절망적인 우리 모습 가운데 기쁨이 찾아옵니다. 주님의 손이 우리를 일으켜 세우실 것이기 때문입니다.
주님의 손은 강요하거나 견책하는 손이 아닙니다. 그 손이 우리의 어깨에 닿을때, 말로 다할 수 없는 평강과 위로가 찾아옵니다.  - P168

자신의 권리를 포기한 아브라함의 이야기입니다. 권리를 포기하는 삶은 세상과동일한 가치를 갖지 않겠다는 선언입니다. 권리 포기는 더 이상 자신의 삶을 스스로 주장하지 않겠다는 고백입니다. 그러므로 권리를 포기할 때 우리는 하나님께서 선택하시는 인생을 살 수 있습니다.  - P169

예수님께서 겟세마네 동산의 기도에서승리하실 수 있었던 이유는 ‘권리를 포기하는 기도를 드렸기 때문입니다. 우리가 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지기를 기도하면, 하나님께서는 우리를 최선으로 인도해 주십니다. "그곳에서 믿음으로 살면 당신은 당신의 권리를 기쁘게 포기하고하나님께서 당신을 위해 선택하시도록 허락할 것입니다." 하나님의 음성에 순종할 때 이런 일이 일어납니다. 이런 순종을 통해 우리는 인간적이고 자연적인 삶을 ‘영적인 삶‘으로 바꾸는 훈련 속으로 들어갑니다.

최선 vs. 차선
우리 인생의 문제는 늘 ‘최선‘과 ‘차선‘ 사이의 선택입니다.
"The good is always the enemy of the best(‘선‘은 늘 최선‘의 점입니다)"라는 챔버스의 말을 꼭 새겨두십시오. 믿음 생활의 가장 큰 원수는 ‘죄‘가 아닌 ‘나의 권리를 따라 사는 삶입니다.  - P169

믿음생활을 시작하면 죄를 구별할 정도의 능력을 갖게 됩니다. 반면 ‘선‘은 죄가 아니나 온전한 하나님의 뜻이라 말할 수는 없습니다. 적당히 비난받지 않고 정당하게 내가 가진 권리를 누리는 ‘선‘은 절대로 ‘최선‘이 될 수 없습니다.  - P169

아브라함이 조카 롯보다 먼저 좋은 것을 선택했을지라도그의 ‘마땅한 권리‘를 다른 사람들이 비판하지는 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서 원하시는 것은 마땅히 누릴 수 있는 권리가 아니라 하나님 앞에서 더 온전한 모습입니다.  - P169

잠언은 입문 단계로서 마치 초중고 과정처럼 하나님께서 창조하신 세계의 일반적인 현상과 규범들을 배우는 단계이다. 그다음단계는 욥기의 단계로서, 학교를 졸업하고 세상에 나가 직접 경험을 해 보니, 학교에서 배운 대로 되지 않는다는 것을 깨닫는 단계이다. 규칙에 예외들이 있다는 것을 알게 되는 과정이라 할 수 있다.
마지막 단계는 전도서의 단계이다. 마치 인생을 살아가면서 규범과예외를 다 경험한 사람이 나중에 일생을 뒤돌아보면, 그 당시에는예외처럼 보였던 것조차 어느 거대한 규칙의 일부였음을 깨닫게 되는 것이다.  - P25

사람을 살리는 지혜가 적절하게 사용되지 못하면 사람을 죽이고 영혼을 파괴하는 폭력이 될 수 있다는 것이 욥기가 알려주는지혜의 핵심이다. - P27

욥기는 잠언의 인과응보 원리 자체를 부정하지는 않는다. 욥 또한그 원리에 따라 살아온 사람이다. 하지만 욥기는 규범적 지혜의 원리가 작동하는 영역에는 한계가 있다는 사실을 의로운 자의 고난이라는 소재를 통해 극적으로 보여 준다. 잠언이 이 땅에서 살아가는 인간의 삶을 다룬다면, 욥기는 하늘의 세계와 죽음 너머의 세계로, 그리고 인간의 영향력이 미치지 못하는 야생동물들의 세계로시야를 확대한다.  - P27

하나님이 다스리는 영역 중 인간이 영위하는 공간은 제한적이라는 사실을 알려 줌으로써 잠언의 규범적 지혜의 한계를 폭로한다. 잠언의 ‘뿌린 대로 거둔다‘는 원리도 대부분의 경우에 적용할 수 있지만 한 치의 오차도 없이 작동하는 기계적인 원리가 아니라는 사실을 지적한다.  - P27

인간 세상이 그 원리대로 움직이도록 창조하시고 다스리시는 분은 하나님이지만, 하나님 자체가 그원리 안에 갇혀 있는 분은 아니라는 것이 욥기의 신론(神論)이다.  - P27

‘까닭 없는 신앙‘은 불가능하다는 것이 사탄의 신학이고, 그것이 가능하다는 것이 욥의 신앙이다. 주시거나 거두시거나 하나님이 찬양받지 못할 이유는 없다. 비록 무화과나무와포도나무에 열매가 없고 외양간에 소가 없을지라도 하나님 한 분으로 인해 즐거워하며 기뻐하겠다는 하박국의 신앙이다(합 3:17-18).
욥은 욥기의 처음부터 끝까지 신앙인으로서 가질 수 있는 최고의모습을 우리에게 보여 준다. - P29

 하나님과 세상에 대한 우리의 지식이 코끼리 다리 만지는 격으로 지극히 제한적이라는 사실을 아는 것이 욥기의 지혜이다. 욥기의 반성적 지혜는 규범을 안다고 하는 잠언의 지혜가 어쩌면 교만일 수 있다고 알려 준다. - P30

고통과 질병을 잠언의 틀에서만 이해하는 것은, 욥의 친구들이 그러했던 것처럼, 피해자를 탓하는 폭력 혹은 ‘2차 가해‘를 저지를 수 있음을 경고하고 있다. 욥기의 하나님이 사탄에게 책임을돌리지 않으시듯, 신앙인은 손쉽게 타인을 정죄하거나 악에 책임을전가해서는 안 된다.  - P31

욥기는 우리가 극심한 고통을 겪는 사람에게 어떠한 태도를 취해야하는가를 잘 보여 준다. 고통을 당하는 사람에게 그 고통의 원인을 설명하거나 이해시키려는 태도를 취해서는 안 된다. 고통을 당하는 사람의 잘못을 지적해서도 안 되지만, 그 고통이 무언가를 ‘깨닫게 하시려는 하나님의 뜻이라는 설명 역시 교만이다.  - P31

욥기의 ‘의로운 자의 고난‘은 ‘까닭 없는 신앙‘이 가능한가 하는 문제를 제기하기 위해 시작되었지, 읍에게 무언가를 깨닫게 하기 위해 시작된 것이 아니다. - P31

 "내가 주께 대하여 귀로 듣기만 하였사오나 이제는 눈으로 주를뵈옵나이다"(욥42:5). 남들에게서 귀로 들은 모범답안을 버릴 때 그분께서 직접 내 눈앞에 나타나신다. 그분은 동일한 하나님이시지만우리 각자의 눈에는 모두 다르게 비친다. - P33

염려는 하나님을 불신하기 때문에 찾아옵니다. 다른 말로 하면 불신 외에는 우리를 염려하게 하는 것이 없습니다. 우리 속에 있는 말씀이 생각나지 않고, 삶에 적용되지 않는 이유는 염려로 인해 하나님의 말씀이 질식되었기 때문입니다. 염려에서 벗어날 때 우리 속에 하나님의 말씀이 살아 역사하십니다.  - P167

챔버스는 불신앙을 치료하는 유일한 방법이 ‘성령님께 순종하는 것‘이라고 말합니다. "제자들에게 주신 예수님의 위대하신 말씀은 ‘다 내려놓으라‘는 것입니다."
한줄노트 염려‘는 우리가 하나님을 불신할 때 찾아옵니다. - P167

우리는 보통 염려를 ‘사려 깊은 행동‘쯤으로 생각합니다.
그러나 예수님은 일반적인 염려를 ‘불신앙‘이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 즉 염려하지않는 것은 하나님을 신뢰하고 있다는 증거입니다. 성령께서 우리 안에 들어오시면 매 순간 하나님이 어디에 계신지 계속 물어보십니다. 성령께서는 우리가 주님을 첫 번째로 고려할 때까지 계속 물으실 것입니다.  - P167

우리 삶에 우선순위가 분명하지 않다면 늘 혼란스러울 수밖에 없기 때문입니다. 챔버스도 분명하게 말합니다. "우리가 주님이 아닌 다른 것을 먼저 고려할 때마다 혼돈이 있게 됩니다."

15Moses said to the Lord,

16"May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community

17to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd."

18So the Lord said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.

19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.

20Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.

21He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in."

Israel is preparing to enter Canaan, but Moses’s task is coming to an end. The responsibility of leading the next generation of God’s people will belong to another. From the top of a high mountain, Moses is blessed to see the land his people will inherit. It is, for God’s servant, a time of reflection. - P124

Moses may have considered the successes and failures of the past, but he is also aware of the future. Because Moses cares deeply about the people he has led for many years, he asks God to provide a new leader for the people so that they will not be like sheep without a shepherd. - P124

Despite his failures, he looks to the future, seeking God’s blessings on His people. - P124

Joshua is God’s chosen servant to lead His people. In a public ceremony, Joshua stands before the congregation and Eleazar the priest as Moses lays his hand on him. - P124

Two aspects of leadership stand out here. First, the former leader bestows some of his authority upon the new one. Second, God’s people witness the passing of the mantle. - P124

They see Moses acknowledge that his task is complete, and the new leader is blessed to take up God-given authority. However, Joshua will not operate alone. He will have the support of Eleazar the priest who will assist him in his new role. - P124

We see an example of a godly change in leadership that is marked by humility, openness, and support. - P124

"The fruits of your life are born often in your pain and in your vulnerability and inyour losses. The fruits of your life come only after the plow has carved through yourland. God wants you to be fruitful."- Henri Nouwen - P124

Dear God, grant me the wisdom to recognize the successes and learn from the failures in my life. May I keep in step with Your Holy Spirit through every change. - P125

God commands Moses to instruct Israel on regular offerings. Each day, aburnt offering of two lambs, one in the morning and one at twilight, is tobe made, along with a grain offering. On the Sabbath, two lambs are to beoffered together with a drink offering and grain offering. God gives additionalinstructions for monthly offerings. - P127

God converses with us primarily through His words in Scripture.
We can also use His words to respond to Him.

욥기 전체를 이끌어 가는 중심축은 모든 행위나 현상에는 분명한 원인과 까닭이 있다고 주장하는 측(사탄, 세 친구, 그리고 엘리후)과,
모든 일에 반드시 원인과 까닭이 있는 것은 아니거나 혹은 있다 하더라도 인간은 그 원인과 까닭을 알 수 없다고 주장하는 측, 그리고 하나님) 사이의 대립이다. - P23

1) 욥은 홀로 반성적 지혜를 대변하는 반면, 친구들은 세 명이함께 규범적 지혜를 지지한다. 이것은 욥기가 쓰인 당대에 (지금도 마찬가지지만) 규범적 지혜가 훨씬 보편적인 지혜였음을 나타낸다. 성경 전체로 보아서도 ‘의인/지혜자에게는 상과 복이, 악인/무지자에게는 재앙과 징벌이‘라는 규범적 지혜의 표현이 주를 이룬다.  - P20

반면에 욥이 대변하는 반성적 지혜는 상대적으로 적게(그러나 중요도는결코 적지 않게 나타난다. 우리의 행위와 무관하게 값없이 주시는 하나님의 은혜, 우리가 잘못한 대로 우리에게 갚지 말아 달라는 탄원시들, 논밭과 외양간에 아무것도 없어도 하나님 한 분으로 기뻐할수 있다는 하박국의 신앙 등이 바로 인과응보의 원리를 초월한 진술이다. 부자와 나사로의 비유, 포도원 품꾼의 비유, 탕자의 비유 등예수님의 천국 비유들 역시 여기에 속한다. - P20
