예수가 이 마을에서 태어나신 것은 매우 적절했다. 성경 속에서 베들레헴은 이미 위험(라헬에게, 다윗의 부하들에게)과 기쁨(베냐민의 탄생, 다윗의 기름 부음, 메시아에 대한 소망을 위한 초점)의 공간이었다.
두 아들이 모두 죽었을 때 (복‘을 뜻하는 나오미는 쓰라림‘을 뜻하는
‘마라‘로 불리기를 원했다. 하지만 그의 쓰라림은 기쁨으로 변했다. 누가는 (이 장의 첫머리에 인용한 누가복음의 본문에서 예수의 탄생을 ‘큰 기쁨‘으로 보지만, 이 기쁨은 고통으로 제어될 것이다. 그분의 탄생에 대한 반응으로 헤롯은 무고한 아이들을 살육한다(마2:16~18). 그리고 조금 지나 누가의 이야기에서 마리아는 이 아이의 삶이 이스라엘 중 많은 사람을 패하거나 흥하게 할 것이며 ‘칼이 네 마음을 찌르듯 할 것이라는 말을 듣는다(눅 2:34~35). - P46
