Paul says that anyone who passes judgment is without excuse because theydo the same things. God‘s judgment is based on truth and His kindness ismeant to lead people to repentance. God will repay everyone according towhat they have done; both Jews and Gentiles will be held accountable whenHe judges people‘s secret thoughts. - P35

1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

2Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

3So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

- P34

God does not show favoritism in His righteous judgment. His people should not assume that they are superior and condemn others for their sins. These verses remind us of the hypocrisy of passing judgment on other people while committing sins ourselves. - P36

The truth is that no one is able to escape God’s judgment. Sometimes we are quick to take advantage of God’s love and patience toward us, but we should actually respond with repentance when we experience His kindness. Instead of being stubborn and unrepentant, we should recognize the grace we have received and persist in doing good for His glory and honor. - P36

We should remember that, despite our rebellion and sinfulness, God made a way for us to receive His forgiveness because of His righteousness.
- P36

The Jews are familiar with God‘s Law, but simply knowing His Law doesnot lead to being declared righteous in His sight and being exempt fromjudgment. Those who know God‘s Law are also judged by that Law, andthey are declared righteous when they obey the Law.  - P36

Those who do notknow God‘s Law are still accountable for their actions. They cannot claimignorance or innocence because everyone has a conscience that guides theirmorality. Their conscience acts as a divine law written on their hearts, help-ing them know what is right and wrong.  - P36

Therefore,
everyone can understand the gospel; we all know that we need the saving work of Jesus tocleanse us from our sin. - P36

Dear God, You are so merciful. I am immensely grateful that Jesus gave His life for me so that I could be cleansed from my sin and receive Your forgiveness. Help me to never take this grace for granted. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. - P37

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

- P30

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

- P30

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.

27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

- P31

29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,

30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

31they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
- P31

The wrath of God is being revealed against all godlessness and wickednessby which people suppress the truth. Even though God‘s eternal power anddivine nature have been made plain to them, they neither glorify nor thankGod but exchange His truth for lies and follow their sinful desires.  - P31

Therefore,
God gives them over to a depraved mind. - P31

God’s eternal power and divine nature can be seen in creation, but when people embrace wickedness, they suppress the truth. They recognize God’s hand in the world, but they do not glorify or give thanks to Him. They claim to be wise but foolishly worship idols that look like human beings or animals rather than worshiping the Lord. Those who do not believe in Jesus are able to detect the power and nature of God, but they ignore the truth when they choose godlessness. - P32

As Christians, we know and have experienced much of God’s eternal power and divine nature, but we, too, should be wary because we can also suppress the truth when we choose sin and idolatry over God.
- P32

Paul describes the severity of many kinds of sin and the harm they produce.
The consequences of sins like sexual impurity and murder may be obvious,
but Paul also mentions subtler sins such as envy, gossip, arrogance, and disloyalty. Any of these sins can ruin not only the person engaging in them butalso the people around them.  - P32

Scripture warns those who know that theiractions deserve God‘s judgment yet continue in their sins and even approveof others who practice them. God does not force us to comply to His willbut those who continue in sin and encourage others to sin will meet severeconsequences for their actions. To those who truly repent, however, Godfreely offers forgiveness. - P32

Dear God, I am in awe of Your eternal power and divine nature. I confess that there are times when I have allowed idols to tempt me away from You. - P33

Please reveal any sinful tendencies in my life and help me fight their pull. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P33

When sinful patterns including envy, gossip, and arrogance start to arise inus, the people who know us best can recognize and call out the behavior wemay not even realize we have adopted. This requires trust and vulnerability,
not only on the part of the sinner, but also on the part of the one calling outthe sinful behavior. Such conversations are possible when close relationshipshave been built over time on a strong foundation, cultivating a willingnesson both parties to give and receive love and truth.
- P33

am grateful to have family members and friends who love the Lord, andI am open to their correction and rebuke. It can sting a bit at the time, butI welcome their words and actions because I know they love me and desirethe best for me. I experience God‘s goodness and grace when they speak thetruth. They catch me when I
falter in my walk with the Lord and help mein the sanctification process of becoming more like Christ. - P33

16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

17For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

- P27

11I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—

12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.

- P26

Paul knows that Rome is an influential city, and although he has not yet had a chance to minister there, he thanks God because the faith of the Romans is being reported all over the world! Paul writes his letter to share more about God and to let the Romans know that he prays often for them. - P28

Whether we are in influential cities or remote towns, let us share the gospel freely and confidently, knowing that the Spirit is at work sparking faith in unexpected places and in unexpected ways. - P28

And let us not hesitate to encourage believers—even those we have not met—because we recognize that they are our brothers and sisters in Christ all over the world. - P28

Heavenly Father, You are still at work in this world to make Your gospel spread rapidly. Guide me in doing my part to support my brothers and sisters all around the world, and fill me with Your zeal so that I may boldly proclaim the gospel wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P29

Paul thanks God for the Romans and prays for them continually. He wants tovisit them and strengthen them in their shared faith.  - P27

Paul is eager to preachthe gospel, which is the power of God that brings salvation. The gospel revealsthe righteousness of God, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last. - P27

In the prominent city of Rome where power, wealth, and social class arevalued, the very small minority of Christians could easily have felt ashamedof being followers of Jesus. However, Paul boldly proclaims that he is notashamed of the gospel. He is eager to preach the gospel to all, regardless ofethnic background or level of understanding, because it holds God‘s powerto save and reveals the righteousness He offers to those who believe.  - P28

Theremay be times when we are tempted to hide the fact that we are Christiansout of fear of criticism or judgment. Instead, may we be like Paul, un-ashamedly proclaiming Christ and excited to see the power of God bringingsalvation to everyone who believes in Him. - P28

Despite some negative interactions, I was ultimately proud to study theol-ogy because I knew it was certainly not an easy subject and not a decisionI came to lightly. Some of those who judged me harshly discovered overtime that I was actually a "normal" person and not an intolerant and overlyconservative one. With the Holy Sprit‘s guidance, I was able to representChrist through my character and words. - P29

1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—

2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures

3regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,

4and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

- P22

5Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.

- P23

Paul introduces himself as a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostleand set apart for the gospel of God. This gospel was promised through theprophets and is about Jesus, who was appointed the Son of God in power. Paulwrites to all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be His holy people. - P23

The apostle Paul begins his letter to the Romans by acknowledging his role. He is firstly a servant of Christ Jesus and lives to serve the Lord and do His will. Paul then asserts his calling to spread the gospel message, which was promised through God’s prophets and was fulfilled in Jesus. - P24

Centuries later, we continue in this work of carrying the gospel message as servants of the Lord. We do not have to be pastors or missionaries to spread the gospel. . - P24

All believers are called to represent Christ and to share about the love and grace God extended to us through His work on the cross. Like Paul, let us embrace our roles as servants of the Lord and live to serve Him well - P24

The Christians in Rome are assured that they belong to Jesus Christ. Theiridentity is grounded in Him. They can have confidence that they are lovedby God and called to be His holy people, and that through the Father andthe Son, they receive grace and peace.  - P24

We sometimes base our identity onother things, forgetting that our true identity is in our belonging to Jesus.
However, when we remember that we are loved and cherished by God, ourthoughts and actions begin to shift.  - P24

Being secure in His love prompts us tolikewise respond with love and compels us to live up to our calling to be Hisholy people, resembling His character and following His ways. - P24

We may think that being a faithful servant of Christ requires being an apos-tle like Paul. We may assume that traveling around the world to evangelizeor preaching the gospel from the pulpit are the ultimate forms of service toHim. However, all of us can demonstrate faithful service to God by sharingthe gospel message at any time wherever we go. We can speak about Jesus atour jobs, schools, or even grocery stores. Moreover, faithful service does notneed to be limited to preaching the gospel. Being a good servant of the Lordcan look like parenting children well, being diligent at work, participatingin a local mission project, or even cleaning toilets! - P25

Dear Lord, thank you for making me Yours. When I start to wander or doubt, remind me that I am loved and cherished and that I am called to be a member of Your holy people. I am grateful for the privilege to serve Your kingdom. In Your name I pray, amen. - P25
