3Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. - P132

7Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. - P132

8You transplanted a vine from Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.

9You cleared the ground for it, and it took root and filled the land.

10The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.

11Its branches reached as far as the Sea, its shoots as far as the River.

- P132

12Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes?

13Boars from the forest ravage it, and insects from the fields feed on it.

14Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine,

15the root your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself.

16Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire; at your rebuke your people perish.

17Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself.

18Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.

19Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

- P133

The psalmist pleads with God to restore Israel. He calls on the Shepherd ofIsrael to awaken His might and save His people.  - P133

He laments the sorrow andderision that have come as a result of God‘s anger. He asks God revive Hispeople that they may call on His name. - P133

Asaph writes a psalm of communal lament. The first half of the psalm con-tains the nation‘s cry for deliverance. The people call upon their Shepherdand ask for His restoration and salvation. The psalm also laments Israel‘sdreadful state and their being an object of derision and mockery to theirneighbors and enemies. Although this psalm was sung as a community, weas individual believers can also apply its theme of repentance.  - P134

We shouldrepeatedly ask for God to turn us away from our habitual sins and to helpus turn toward Him.  - P134

May we not follow the path of disobedience towardinevitable destruction and instead seek repentance from our sins.  - P134

Let useagerly and humbly seek God and anticipate His restoration and salvation. - P134

The rest of the psalm revisits Israel‘s history, including God‘s faithfulnessin the past. The people were brought out of Egypt and nations were drivenout before them. However, now the people are left vulnerable as the pro-tection of the Lord has lifted from them. The people ask for God to returnand watch over them once again.  - P134

When we face the negative consequencesof our sins, it can feel as though God has abandoned us because we haveprioritized our own desires and comfort over obedience to Him.  - P134

In thosemoments of discomfort and pain, we should repent and remember God‘s love for us.  - P134

We should seek His restoration and obey and worship Him once again. - P134

Heavenly Father, You are the forgiver of sin. Sometimes I neglect You and prioritize myself over You, and still You are patient with me. In love, You discipline me, not to hurt me but to save me. Thank you that You are near and faithful. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P135

"Jesus is the true vine (John 15:1-6). Only through uniting with him by faith can webecome branches and have God‘s life flow into us. Through him we can be revived."

John 12:27-29 NLT
[27] "Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came! [28] Father, bring glory to your name." Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, "I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again." [29] When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him.
- P203

5How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire?

6Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not call on your name;

7for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.
- P128

9Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. - P129

13Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise - P129

The psalmist laments over Jerusalem‘s destruction. He mourns the desecration of the temple, the slaughter of God‘s people, and their disgrace amongthe nations.  - P129

He pleads for God‘s mercy, asking Him to avenge His people anddeliver them, so that God‘s people will praise Him forever, from $generationto generation. - P129

In this lament, the psalmist mourns what has happened to his nation. He is aware that the people are fully culpable. Their sins have brought about judgment and destruction. - P130

The people beg for relief while acknowledging that they have been unfaithful in the past and deserve God’s anger and judgment. When we realize that our sin has led to the pain we are experiencing, we can wallow in our sorrows or we can allow our pain to lead us to much-needed repentance. - P130

We repent in humility and gratefulness knowing that, because of Jesus, God’s wrath has already been fully satisfied on the cross. - P130

Rather than allowing the consequences of sin to persist in our lives, we have the opportunity to grow ever closer to God in our character and in our actions. - P130

After seeking forgiveness, the psalmist continues by asking God to demonstrate that He is the avenger of His servants who have been condemnedto die.  - P130

The people identify themselves as God‘s sheep, using the imageryof the shepherd to ask for His protection and care, and they promise thatgenerations will praise Him forever.  - P130

When others have committed wrongsagainst us, we can be tempted to seek revenge. However, this passage servesas a reminder that the God of justice cares about His people.  - P130

We can lookto Him to deliver us from our troubles and to judge those who oppress us,We can offer praise to Him, giving Him the glory that He richly deservesfor His deliverance and protection.
- P130

Dear God, thank you that I do not suffer the wrath I deserve because of the grace poured out through Your Son, Jesus Christ. . - P131

I give You all the praise and glory in gratefulness for Your deliverance and protection. In Your Son’s name I pray, amen - P131
