[NIV] 1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, "I would choosetwelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit ofDavid. 2 I would attack him while he is wearyandweak.I would strike him with terror, and then all the peoplewith him will flee. I would strike down only the king3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of theman you seek will mean the return of all; all the peoplewill be unharmed." - P70

If he should attack your troops first, whoever hearsabout it will say, "There has been a slaughter among thewho follow Absalom.‘ 10 Then even the bravesttroopssoldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will meltwith fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighterand that those with him are brave. - P71
14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The advice ofHushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel." Forthe LORD had determined to frustrate the good adviceof Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom. 14 Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "Hushai‘s advice is better than Ahitho-phel‘s." For the LORD had determined to defeat the counsel of Ahithophel, which reallywas the better plan, so that he could bring disaster on Absalom! - P71
Ahithophel advises Absalom to pursue and kill David immediately so that allthe people will come to him unharmed. - P71
Hushai advises Absalom to wait andgather troops from all around Israel because David and his men are experi-enced fighters. He assures Absalom all of Israel will side with him in bringingDavid down. - P71

In Ahithophel‘s advice to Absalom, we can observe some of the fatalflaws common in schemes that are hatched by the enemies of God. - P72
Hisplan is impatient and shortsighted, proposing a relatively small armybe gathered for an immediate attack. He also severely underestimateshis opponent and is over-confident about his chances of success. - P72
Theenemy will often strike us when we are "weary and weak," thinking thathe has the upper hand, but he could not be more mistaken. - P72
We havethe Lord of heaven‘s armies on our side, and when we are weak, He isstrong. - P72
The schemes of the enemy will never prevail against our mightyGod or the people who are covered by His protection. - P72
Hushai, David‘s spy, presents an alternative plan that will buy Davidsome time to prepare for Absalom‘s attack. - P72
Absalom chooses to followHushai‘s advice, and Scripture specifically states that God is workingbehind the scenes to frustrate Ahithophel‘s advice. - P72
Absalom believes hehas chosen a winning strategy, but God is in fact leading him straightinto defeat in accordance with His plan to save David‘s life. - P72
Even whenthe wicked appear to win powerand success, God is still in control. - P72
Hewill uphold the righteous and bring about His justice in His perfecttiming. - P72
Let us take comfort in knowing that everything that happensin this world-down to the smallest detail-is orchestrated by ourgracious and loving Father. - P72
While theidea of God‘s absolute sovereignty may cause some people to feel un-for those who know God, it is actually a great comfort. - P73
Our Godis perfectly wise, just, righteous, loving, and merciful. - P73
He promisesto work all things together for our good. We can therefore rest in theknowledge that the Lord holds everything in His hands. - P73
