kick이라는 단어는 말 그대로 ‘발로 차다’라는 뜻이므로 이 표현은 ‘헤어지다’를 의미하는 것이 아니라 ‘발길질을 했다’라는 뜻밖에는 되지 않는다. 우리말의 ‘차다’라는 뉘앙스를 살리는 영어 단어는 dump가 있다. 이것은 ‘(애인을) 버리다’라는 의미의 동사이다.
그러므로 She dumped her boyfriend.라고 하면 된다.
‘차다’ 보다 조금 더 세련되게 ‘헤어지다’라고 표현하고 싶다면 break up with를 사용해서 She broke up with her boyfriend.라고 한다.
