책에 대한 아무런 설명이 붙어있지 않으니 간략한 설명으로 시작해 보려고 합니다. 우선 발행일을 보면 1972년으로 되어있죠. 그 예전에 책을 어떻게 읽으면 좋을 것인지를 가르칠 목적으로 책이 쓰여졌습니다. 책은 약 420여 페이지 정도 되는데 appendix를 빼면 본 내용은 350여 페이지 정도 됩니다. 일반 페이퍼백 사이즈로 우리 나라에서 많이 출간되는 책의 사이즈와 거의 같거나 약간 작은 정도에요. 가벼운 갱지(재활용 종이 같은) 재질로 되어있어서 책이 살짝 두껍긴 해도 가벼워서 들고 다니기 좋고 인쇄도 깔끔하게 되어있네요. 단어도 전혀 어렵지 않게 되어있어서 중급자 이상이면 무리없이 읽을 수 있을 거라고 생각되어 지고요.
책은 지금에 와서 보면 너무나도 당연하지만 글을 제대로 읽으려면 알고 있어야 하는 내용들, 어떻게 책을 능동적으로 읽을 수 있을지에 대한 내용을 담고 있습니다. 밑에 쓰여있는 부제인 <The classic guide to intelligent reading> 처럼요. 감성과 재미 등 정보를 위한 책 읽기가 아닌 취미를 위한 책 읽기를 한다면 아무런 비판이나 체계젹인 태도없이 글을 읽어도 상관없겠지만 읽을 거리가 너무 많은데 그 중에서 내가 필요한 책을 찾고 그 책을 제대로 읽기 위해서는 가끔은 각성하고 읽는 태도도 필요하다고 봅니다. 저 또한 누워서 굴러다니면서 여유롭게 책 읽기를 즐기는 편이지만 읽지 못하고 쌓여하는 책이 점차 많아지고 읽거나 사야할 책의 목록이 늘어나고 있는 형편이다 보니 언제까니나 이런 태도를 견지할 수만은 없더라고요. 
일단 책의 내용을 파악하는데 있어서 목차만 읽어봐도 정말 많은 정보를 얻을 수 있네요. 글들을 하나씩 읽으면서 세세한 지침이나 정보를 더 얻을 수 있긴 하지만 대략적인 글의 뼈대는 다 목차에 나와있습니다. 저자가 말한 여러 읽기 중에서 통독하면서 어떤책을 읽을지 선택하는 과정에서 많이 사용하는 방법이 나오는데 그 방법을 바로 적용해서 목차를 훑어보면 좋을 것 같아요. 바로 systematic skimmin or Prereading 입니다. 한국말로 하자면 목차를 죽 훑어서 뼈대를 잡는 것이죠. 물론 표지나 서문 작가의 말, 추천하는 글 등을 읽어보는 것도 다 포함되는 겁니다. 사실 이 방법은 거의 모든 사람이 책을 고를 때 사용하고 있는 방법이죠 이 사실을 역으로 이용해서 출판사에서는 좀 더 눈길을 끌 수 있는 제목이나 서문을 쓰려고 혈안이 되어서 너무 상업적으로 흘러가버리는 경우도 많습니다만은.. 대부분의 작가는 자신의 글을 좀 더 많은 사람이 쉽게 이해하고 읽어주길 바라기 때문에 목차를 쓸 때 그냥 마구잡이로 쓰지는 않는다는 거죠. 특히 소설이나 가벼운 에세이, 자기계발서의 경우를 제외하고 정보를 주려는 목적의 글이라면 이 방법이 정말 효과적이라는 사실은 예나 지금이나 변함이 없는 것 같아요. 너무 당연히 알고 있던 사실이지만 글을 통해서 읽으니 그 가치를 새삼 다시 깨닫게 되면서 넋놓고 책을 훑어보는 일은 많이 줄어든 것 같아요.  이 책에서는 목차와 함께 챕터 1에 정말 주옥같은 주요 글들이 많이 나오니까 책을 직접 보고 사실 분들은 일단 이 부분을 꼼꼼히 체크하고 목차에서 관심이 가는 부분을 군데군데 정해서 몇 페이지씩 읽어보고 괜찮으면 책을 사면 될 것 같아요. 음.. 서론(?)은 이정도로 하고 그럼 간단히 목차를 정리해 볼게요. 특히나 챕터1은 부 목차까지 자세히 적어보겠습니다.
