「Now One Foot, Now the Other」로 처음 알게된 Tomie DePaola 작가님을 미자모 촉촉도서모임을 통해 챕터북으로 만났다. 할아버지 Tom과 손자 Tomie의 이야기로 가슴뭉클했던 기억이 있던지라 이번에는 챕터북이니 작가님의 이야기를 좀 더 길게 들어볼 수 있지 않을까 기대하며 책을 펼쳤다.
저자님의 어린시절 이야기를 담고 있는 이 책은 주인공 Tomie의 가족들 소개로 시작된다. 역시나 표지에서부터 가족이 등장하는데 첫장을 넘겨보면 Tomie의 그림자 그림을 시작으로 Tomie의 가족들 그림이 눈길을 끌며 눈이 편안해진다.
1938년 Connecticut주 Meriden, Columbus Avenue 살던 Tomie네 집에 big hurricane이 강타하면서 이야기가 시작된다. 이 책은 big hurricane의 여파로 새로 집을 지어 26 Fairmount Avenue로 이사를 하기로 결정한 Tomie네 가족의 이야기를 담고 있는데 조부모님과 함께 사는 5살 Tomie의 시선에서 펼쳐지는 소소한 일상이 주된 내용이다. 참 심각한 상황임에도 어린 Tomie의 눈에 비쳐지는 일상은 전혀 심각하지가 않다. Irish Mom과 Italian Dad사이에서 태어난 5살 Tomie의 이야기는 조부모님과의 관계가 참 돋보이는데 작가님의 그림책 「Now One Foot, Now the Other」,「Nana Upstairs & Nana Downstaris」에서 만났던 주인공들이 등장해서 참 반가웠다. 그 중에서도 Irish Grandfather Tom과 Irish great-grandmother Nana UPstairs의 이야기는 그림책을 통해 나에게 가슴 찡한 스토리가 기억되어 있는지라 저절로 눈길이 갔다.
그림책「Now One Foot, Now the other」에서 가슴찡했던 할아버지 Tom과의 추억의 흔적들이 이 책에도 등장했다.
I called my Irish grandfather Tom, because he told me to. " Tomie will be grown up before he can say 'Grandpa,' "he told my mom. " He can call me Tom. " So I did.
The plasterers finally came and covered over all my beautiful drawings. I was mad about that, but my grandfather, Tom, told me that was perfect because they'd always be there under the plaster and wallpaper. That made me feel better. Tom always made me feel better.
Tom read me one of my comic books, and I played with the special wooden blocks that were kept in the sewing room.
또 다른 그림책「Nana Upstairs & Nana downstairs」에서 만났던 Nana Upstairs와의 이야기도 이 책을 통해 접할 수 있어 참 좋았다.
Every Sunday we went down to Wallingford. As soon as we arrived, I always ran upstairs. Upstairs was a special place for me, and my Nana Upstairs was a special person to me. I loved her, and every Sunday I spent all my time with her.
I didn't draw Nana Upstairs because she had died and gone to heaven a few months before.
Nana Upstairs와 Chocolate인줄 알고 먹었던 laxatives, Mr. Walt Disney가 True Story를 읽지 않았다면서 극장에서 흥분해서 소리치는 Tomie의 모습, Aunt Nell이 알려주신 guardian angel을 소환해서 폭우를 멈추게 했다는 이야기 모두 너무 사랑스러웠지만 가장 배꼽잡았던 부분은 1939년 가을 Tomie가 처음으로 유치원에 갔던 날의 일화였다.
I was excited about going to school because I knew that in school you learnd to read. I really wanted to learn so that I wouldn't always have to wait for my mom to read stories to me.
" When do we learn how to read ?" I asked.
" Oh, we don't learn how to read in kindergarten. We learn to read next year, in first grade. "
" Fine, " I said " I'll be back next year. " And I walked right out of the school and all the way home.
There I was, holding one of my mom's big books, staring at it, hoping that I could learn to read by myself.
너무나 사랑스러운 우리의 주인공 Tomie의 성장기가 궁금해서 이 챕터북 시리즈를 계속 읽어봐야겠다. 조부모님과의 추억이 녹아있는 Tomie의 어린시절 이야기가 궁금하다면 아이와 함께 읽어볼 것을 권한다.
