Throughout Genesis, we see that when people begin a personal relationshipwith God, they think of blessings primarily as a tool to increase their prosperity.  - P3

However, as they mature, they discover that riches and fame cannot satisfy.
Even Joseph, who rules the most powerful empire of his time, finds he is stillheartbroken and yearning for more.  - P3

They all long for the blessings that onlyGod can provide: peace in their family relationships and the purpose that comesfrom obeying God‘s commands.
- P3

As we examine the testimonies of Joseph and the Psalmist, may we see that ourhearts can only find rest when we seek God.  - P3

Instead of chasing what others assume
we need to be successful, let us spend time with the God who has the power to bless by causing all things to work for the improvement of our character. - P3

Our God is rich and generous. He tells us to steward money carefully, not todeny us material comforts, but to enrich us with greater gifts.  - P164

God is like a fathertrying to convince his air conditioner and internet-loving kids to join him on acamping trip. "Kids, let‘s rough it. We‘ll drive to a park and take only what wecan carry on our backs to the campground.  - P164

God does not need our help. He does not pressure us to give to others because itis the only way to help the poor. God wants us to give because it is the only waywe can receive the greater blessings that we otherwise fail to notice or appreciate.
- P165

This means there is no need to feel guilty if you spend money on yourself or yourfamily beyond the basic necessities of life. Celebrate and have times of feasting.
Splurge and give generously to the people you love. Invest and buy the thingsyou need for the future.  - P165

God delights at your pleasure when you taste thingsthat are delicious or wear things that are beautiful. - P165

Becauseour lives are crowded with so much stuff, we are not able to fully enjoy any of it.
That is why God calls us to various spiritual disciplines.  - P165

When we fast and emptyour stomachs, God awakens our appetite. When we give and empty our wallets,
God awakens fresh ideas for generating wealth. When we rest andempty ourschedules, God awakens our love for the people we otherwise take for granted.
- P165

We embrace these disciplines not to earn righteousness by depriving ourselvesbut to receive grace by learning to direct our attention to God. - P165

These disciplines help us to be attentive to our hearts which are so easily deceivedby the messagesof the world.  - P165

If our spending causes more anxiety than peaceand our enjoyment of things is not accompanied by gratitude toward God, we know we are not in God‘s will.  - P165

Such a life leaves us tired and empty. But whenwe are ruled by love, we gain testimonies of what God has shown us, and weare drawn closer to one another.  - P165

When we are attentive to our hearts, we willbe able to discern God‘s will regarding our finances. Instead of giving God thebare minimum, may your stewardship be about receiving the maximum joythat He offers. - P165

"We must never think of salvation as a kind of transaction between God and usin which He contributes grace and we contribute faith. For we were dead andhad to be quickened before we could believe."- John Stott - P146

One essential piece of doctrine that all Christians must remember isthat our faith is a precious gift from God. Therefore, we cannot boastin the quality and strength of our beliefs. - P147

Jesus is the Author andPerfector of our faith and is also the foundation on which our faithgrows.  - P147

When Jesus Christ is the foundation of our faith, whenever weface trials we will be "perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, butnot abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Cor. 4:8-10).
- P147

Our culture often tells us, "Believe in yourself!" While a healthy senseof confidence is a good thing, this cannot be the foundation of ourlives. We need someone outside of us to be our solid rock.  - P147

We see thisin Genesis when God used a few simple dreams to shake the mostpowerful man in the world at the time, sending Pharaoh in search ofanswers that would give him the security he could no longer providefor himself. - P147

Faithful Father, in good and bad times, in seasons when it is hard to see Yourfingerprints in my life and in seasons when they are clearly visible, You remainthe same.  - P147

May my heart rest in You no matter what I am going through. InJesus‘ name, amen. - P147

24 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven goodheads. I told this to the magicians, but none of themcould explain it to me." - P149

27 The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterwardare seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads ofgrain scorched by the east wind: They are seven yearsof famine. - P149

29 Seven years of great abundance are coming through-out the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine willfollow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will beforgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.  - P150

32 The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in twoforms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God,
and God will do it soon. - P150

34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the landto take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the sevenyears of abundance. - P151

God chooses to speak to Pharaoh, the powerful ruler of Egypt, in orderto avert disaster upon the entire nation.  - P152

Through Pharaoh‘s dream andJoseph‘s interpretation, Egypt is able to prepare and protect itself froma devastating famine that will come in seven years‘ time.  - P152

This is just oneof many examples in Scripture where God graciously provides a way ofescape for a multitude of people.
The greatest example of God‘s savinggrace is found in Jesus Christ.  - P152

Just as the Egyptians did not deserve
God‘s favor, none of us deserve the salvation that Jesus purchased forus on the cross-in fact, we deserve the very opposite!  - P152

But God hasmercifully provided a way for us to escape judgment through His Son. - P152

Joseph instructs Pharaoh to appoint a discerning and wise man to oversee the
preparations for the famine.  - P152

As Joseph describes the work thatneeds to be done, it becomes clear that he is the best man for the job.
- P152

Knowing Joseph‘s history, we can see that God has raised him up for thisvery mission.  - P152

The experiences in his life
-both good and bad-haveprovided him with the wisdom necessary to take on the monumentaltask of leading a nation through a potentially disastrous season.  - P152

Just as God worked in Joseph‘s life,
He takes us through different challenges
and experiences that will shape us into the people He wants us to beandprepare us for the things He wants us to do. - P152

Lord God, thank you for Your Son, Jesus. Thank you for sending Him to rescue mefrom the judgment I deserve.  - P152

Now, mold me into the person You want me to beand let me live for Your glory in all that I do. In Jesus‘ name, amen. - P152

8 In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent forall the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh toldthem his dreams, but no one could interpret them forhim. - P144

15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no onecan interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that whenyou hear a dream you can interpret it." - P145

16 "I cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "but Godwillgive Pharaoh the answer
he desires."
- P145

Pharaoh has two dreams, one of seven cows and the other of sevenears of grain. He does not know it yet, but they foreshadow the futureabundance and famine that will come to the land of Egypt.  - P146

And behindit all lies the sovereignty of God, who has planned these events and nowprovides these dreams as an advance warning.  - P146

Pharaoh is shaken to thecore by these dreams and hurries to seek counsel from his magicians andwise men, who are unable to interpret their meaning.  - P146

Some seasons inlife can feel like a series of random, upsetting events and it is hard tofind any meaning or purpose amid the chaos.  - P146

But behind the scenes,
God ordains each detail of our lives for the good of those who belongto Him. - P146

The cupbearer, whose dream Joseph interpreted in prison, finally remembers
Joseph‘s ability.  - P146

His eyewitness testimony of Joseph‘s wisdomconvinces Pharaoh to send for him. When Joseph arrives, Pharaoh mistakes his
divine gift for personal talent.  - P146

Joseph, however, makes it clear that it is
God who will provide the answer.  - P146

This is a risky moveon Joseph‘s part, for he is a prisoner in a foreign land, endorsing a deitythat the Egyptians do not recognize.  - P146

But this shows Joseph‘s reverencefor the one true God, who has remained faithful throughout Joseph‘sunjust imprisonment.  - P146

In our trials, may we be so steadfast in our faiththat we will never hesitate to glorify God even where no one else
acknowledges Him. - P146
