The blinding of Paul‘s eyes was a physical manifestation of his innerspiritual state. He was spiritually blind to the truth of God and lost inhis self-righteousness.  - P90

But now that God opened hisboth physicaland spiritual, he can clearly see that Jesus Christ is his Savior. God usedAnanias to explain the message of the gospel to Paul and clarify thenew mission God had given him. Since that moment, Paul has been awitness for Christ.  - P90

We have all had a similar turning point where oureyes were opened to the salvation of Christ.  - P90

Let us therefore live aswitnesses for Jesus, testifying to the great work He has done in our livesto everyone we encounter. - P90

In his letter to this church, theapostle Paul used an analogy from farming to help the saints under-stand the different roles each person is called to play in gospel minis-Some sow the seeds, others water, and others weed, but it is Godwho causes the plant to grow (1 Cor. 3). This simple illustration helpsus understand that we are coworkers with the sovereign God.
- P91

God is sufficient in Himself and can accomplish all that He wants todo without our input. But He has lovingly called us to participate inHis plan of redemption.  - P91

He has given each one of us different gifts toenable us to fulfill our calling. He has also placed us in unique con-texts in which we are to serve Him.  - P91

That is why it is foolish to compareourselves with fellow believers. God has called us to live for Him aloneand not to build our own empires.  - P91

Whatever we do in the kingdomof God, all of it is important work.  - P91

Other people may not recognizeour efforts, but we are playing to the audience of One. - P91

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your Son Jesus Christ who saved me. Thank youfor the faithful people whom You brought into my life to preach the gospelto me.  - P91

Please help me to remain faithful to the work of spreading the goodnews. In Jesus‘ name, amen. - P91

28 Then the commander said, "I had to pay a lot ofmoney for mycitizenship." "But I was born a citizen,
Paul replied.
כ - P93

Paul continues his defense. He relates how God spoke to him in a trance andtold him to leave Jerusalem and go to the Gentiles.  - P93

When the crowd hearsthis, they are outraged. The commander takes Paul back to the barracks tobe flogged and interrogated. When he is about to be flogged, Paul revealsthat he is a Roman citizen. - P93

Paul continues to address his persecutors. While in Jerusalem, he waspraying and fell into a trance. The Lord told him to leave immediately,
but Paul replied that he had been famous in Jerusalem for zealously per-secuting Christians.  - P94

Perhaps he thought this would make his conversiona powerful testimony to his fellow Jews. But Jesus told him the Jewswould not listen to him. Instead, God would send him to be an apostleto the Gentiles.  - P94

Though our personal testimony may be a compellingstory, only the Holy Spirit can convict people of sin and draw them toGod.  - P94

This is why we should always be praying for the unbelievers intheir hearts to theopenmessageour lives, asking that God wouldofthe gospel. - P95

After hearing Paul‘s story, the crowd only turns more violent and de-mands that he be killed.  - P94

The Roman commander then orders that Paulbe flogged and interrogated in order to find what he did to make thepeople so angry.  - P94

But Paul asserts his rights as a Roman citizen, and thesoldiers are forced to withdraw. A person‘s national citizenship comeswith certain rights and privileges. These rights are not earned but simplybestowed by the nation‘s leader.  - P94

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are cit-izens of heaven, and this comes with the great privilege of enjoying ourKing‘s protection.  - P94

Whenever the enemy wants to attack you or makeyou feel unworthy, remind him of who you are in Christ, and he willhave choice but to retreat. - P94

4 I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death.
arresting both men and women and throwing them in-to prison, 5 as the high priest and all the Council canthemselves testify. I even obtained letters from them totheir associates in Damascus, and went there to bringthese people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. - P88

12 A man named Ananias came to see me. He was adevout observer of the law and highly respected by allthe Jews living there. - P89

15 You will be his witness to all people of what you haveseen and heard. - P88

Paul addresses the crowd in Aramaic and the people become very quiet. Hetells them about his Jewish upbringing and how Jesus appeared before himon the road to Damascus.  - P89

A believer called Ananias met him in Damascusand told him God had chosen him to be His witness. So, Paul was baptized. - P89

Having been given permission to speak by the Roman commander,
Paul stands on the steps and addresses the people who are seeking tokill him.  - P90

He speaks to them in Aramaic, their native language. Thiscommands their attention, and they quiet their voices and listen towhat he has to say. Paul gives an account of his life before he met Christ.
- P90

He was just like them: a Jew, zealous for God, persecuting followers ofJesus to their death. He then explains what happened when he encoun-tered Christ, or rather, when Christ encountered him.  - P90

The revelationof Christ changed his life forever. When we give our lives to Christ,
everything changes.  - P90

We become new creations with a new mission anda new destiny. - P90

True faith in God is when we respond to His Word with completetrust and allow Him, through His Spirit, to lead us moment by moment.  - P87

19 Paul greeted them and reported in detail what Godhad done among the Gentiles through his ministry.

20 When they heard this, they praised God. Then theysaid to Paul: "You see, brother, how many thousandsof Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous forthe law. - P80

25 As for the Gentile believers, we have written to themour decision that they should abstain from food sacri-ficed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangledanimals and from sexual immorality."

26 The next day Paul took the men and purified himselfalong with them. Then he went to the temple to givenotice of the date when the days of purification wouldend and the offering would be made for each of them. - P81

Paul is received warmly by the believers in Jerusalem. Paul reports everythingGod did through his ministry among the Gentiles. The elders hear this andpraise God.  - P81

They tell him many Jews have also believed but they are círcu-lating a false report about Paul‘s teaching. They suggest that Paul performpurification rites to prove these rumors wrong. Paul does this. - P81

Paul goes to Jerusalem, ready to suffer and die for the sake of Christ.  - P82

Hetakes care, however, not to put unnecessary stumbling blocks in thewayof his Jewish brethren.  - P82

The freedom he has in the gospel means that heis no longer obligated to keep Jewish rites of purification. But he usesthat same freedom to keep the purity laws, not for the laws‘ own sake,
but for the sake of those who do not yet believe the gospel.  - P82

We knowthat the world is hostile to the message of the gospel and that those whoproclaim it must expect persecution.  - P82

However, that does not mean wecan disregard the effect of our conduct and choices on those around us,
on the basis that the gospel sets us free.  - P82

Let us rather consider how touse our freedom in a manner that will draw others nearer to the goodnews of Christ. - P82

Dear Jesus, thank you for building up the church. We are Your body.  - P83

Help us torecognize good advice when it is given to us by those who also belong to Yourbody. In Your name, amen. - P83

In the fifteenth century, Portugal had an empire that expanded to Brazil, Asia, and Africa onaccount of its maritime power.  - P82

The country‘s power and wealth have diminished over theyears, and in the early twentieth century, it struggled with several decades of corrupt leader-ship. A democratic government was formed in 1974, and Portugal started to enjoy religiousfreedom.  - P82

Most Portuguese today consider themselves Catholic, but it is more a part of theirculture than a true faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. - P82
