The psalmist recounts Israel‘s perpetual rebellion in the wilderness despiteGod‘s miracles. He recalls the plagues in Egypt and how God delivered themfrom their oppressors, led His people safely through the wilderness, andbrought them to the promised land, driving out nations before them andgiving them the land as an inheritance. - P120

40How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!

41Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.

42They did not remember his power— the day he redeemed them from the oppressor, - P120

The psalmist is shocked that the Israelites continue to disobey God, especially considering how He repeatedly displayed His power with the ten plagues of Egypt. The psalmist lists the plagues to remind the people of all they should have remembered and all they should value in their response to the Lord. - P122

Likewise, when we ponder the Lord’s redemptive power in the stories of the Bible, in our own lives, and in the world today, our response should be to treasure Him. - P122

Most of all, we should meditate on the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who was struck down for us so that we may live. When we remember what He has done, our faith is refueled to respond with even greater obedience and worship. - P122

After recounting the demonstrations of God‘s power in Egypt, the psalmistuses the imagery of a shepherd guiding his sheep to demonstrate the protec-tion and care that God displays toward His people.  - P122

God rescued the Israelites and guided them safely through the wilderness. He drove out nationsand settled His people into their inheritance.  - P122

They never had to be afraidbecause they knew that they were safe with Him. What a wonderful pictureof our God! He continues to shepherd us today, guiding and protecting uswith the help of the Holy Spirit.  - P122

We can be at peace because we are securein Him. Let us live fearlessly, knowing that He is with us. - P122

Heavenly Father, thank you for showing Your redemptive power in my life. - P123

I know I am secure because You are my Shepherd and my guide. Teach me to remain in this place of peace as I remember that You are always with me. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P123

34Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.

35They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.

- P116

36But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;

37their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.

- P116

38Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.

39He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.
- P117

The psalmist describes Israel‘s persistent sin despite witnessing God‘s worders.  - P117

Though they briefly repent when punished, their devotion is insincere.
- P117

Yet, God shows mercy, restraining His wrath and forgiving His people insteadof destroying them. . - P117

He remembers their weakness, knowing their lives are ephemeral - P117

Human nature is a paradox: even though they have seen many of God‘smighty and marvelous works, the Israelites persist in unbelief. They continue sinning, despite witnessing God‘s wonders and experiencing His de-liverance.  - P118

Spiritual transformation does not happen through witnessingexternal signs and wonders. The Israelites‘ pattern of turning their backs onGod then returning to Him only in times of distress reveals how people,
both past and present, often treat God as a backup plan rather than theirsupreme treasure.  - P118

Nevertheless, the crises we face also come from God‘smercy. They bring us to our knees when prosperity has hardened our hearts.
- P118

In spite of the Israelites‘ faithlessness, God restrains His anger and showscompassion. He is still the same today. When we realize our rebellion and backsliding, let us return to Him; He has promised to forgive us and healour waywardness. - P118

Dear Jesus, You are faithful and will never change. Thank you for Your tenderlove.  - P119

Help us to imitate You and be faithful in the small and big things weface in life. In Your name, amen. - P119

Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT
[1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. [2] We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
- P199

Matthew 7:2 NLT
[2] For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

10they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.

11They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.

- P108

12He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.

13He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.

14He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.

- P108

15He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

16he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.

17But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.

18They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
- P109

20True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?"

21When the Lord heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,

22for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.

- P110

23Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;
24
he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.
25
Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
- P110

26He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.

27He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.

28He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.

29They ate till they were gorged— he had given them what they craved.

- P111

30But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,

31God’s anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.

- P111

Today’s passage paints a sobering picture of spiritual amnesia and rebellion. The retreat of the Ephraimites despite being armed shows that we can possess spiritual resources yet fail to use them due to unbelief. - P112

The psalmist recounts Israel’s failure to remember God’s miraculous works—the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea—and His guidance through the wilderness. - P112

The Israelites’ forgetfulness mirrors our own tendency to doubt God’s goodness during challenging times despite His unfailing track record of faithfulness. - P112

When life gets tough, it is easy for us to begin questioning God’s presence or His love. Let us heed Scripture’s warnings against allowing our immediate circumstances to overshadow our memories of God’s past deliverances. - P112

Father, forgive me for the times I forget all the good You have done to me. - P112

Thank you for the requests I made that You granted and for those that You mercifully refused. Cultivate in me a heart of contentment and trust in Your plans. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P112

The psalmist recounts Israel‘s rebellion despite God‘s miracles. The Ephraimites faltered in battle because they forgot God‘s deeds, His guidance, andHis provision. They tested God by demanding the food they craved and byspeaking against Him. God provided but was angered by their unbelief, whichresulted in judgment. - P111

God responds to Israel‘s ingratitude and unbelief with both judgment anprovision. The Israelites‘ demand for meat was not a simple request ffood; they were testing God‘s goodness and wisdom.  - P112

Despite their rebellioand irreverence, God provides abundantly. But this provision itself becomea form of judgment that causes death among the people.  - P112

God sometimegives us what we wrongfully demand and lets us experience the consequences of our own unbelief.  - P112

Sometimes He mercifully withholds what we ask forin order to protect us. But if we persist in our rebellion, He may allow us tohave what we want along with the pain it brings, so that we will realize thatwe don‘t know best; He does. - P112

God converses with us primarily through His words in Scripture.
We can also use His words to respond to Him.
Use the following guide to pray through this week‘s memory verse.
But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth. - Psalm 74:12 - P113
