2 A certain man in Maon, who had property there atCarmel, was very wealthy. He had a thousand goats andthree thousand sheep, which he was shearing in Carmel.

3 His name was Nabal and his wife‘s name was Abigail.
She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but herhusband was surly and mean in his dealings-he wasa Calebite. - P104
4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep. 5 So he sent ten young menand said to them, "Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greethim in my name. 6 Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Goodhealth to you and yourhousehold! And good health toall that is yours! - P104
7 Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When yourshepherds were with us, we did not mistreat them, andthe whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirswas missing. 8 Ask your own servants and they will tell. Therefore be favorable toward my men, since wecome at a festive time. Please give your servants and yourson David whatever you can find for them." - P104
10 Nabal answered David‘s servants, "Who is thisDavid? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants arebreaking away from their masters these days.
11 Why should I take my bread and water, and the meatI have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to mencoming from who knows where?" - P105
13 David said to his men, "Each of you strap on yoursword!" So they did, and David strapped his on as well.
About four hundred men went up with David, whiletwo hundred stayed with the supplies. - P105
Samuel dies and is buried in Ramah. While David is in the wilderness, hesends his men to a Calebite named Nabal and asks for his favor, saying thathe treated his shepherds well. - P105
Nabal, however, insults David and refuses togive anything to him. When David hears what Nabal said, he and his menprepare to attack him. - P105
