정말이지 그 아이의 웃는 얼굴은 자세히 보면 볼수록 뭐라 표현할 수 없는 섬뜩하고 으스스한 것이 느껴지는 것이다. 애당초 그건 웃는 얼굴이 아니다. 이 아이는 전혀 웃고 있지 않다. 그 증거로 아이는 양손을 꽉 쥐고 서 있다. 사람이란 주먹을 꽉 쥔 채 웃을 수는 없는 법이다. 그것은 원숭이다. 웃고 있는 원숭이다. 그저 보기 싫은 주름을 잔뜩 잡고 있을 뿐이다. ‘주름투성이 도련님’이라고 부르고 싶어질 만큼 정말이지 괴상한, 왠지 추하고 묘하게 욕지기를 느끼게 하는 표정의 사진이었다. 나는 지금까지 이렇게 괴상한 표정의 소년을 본 적이 한번도 없다. - <인간 실격> 중에서

그러나 이것 또한 이상하게도 사람이라는 느낌이 전혀 들지 않는다. 교복 왼쪽 가슴에 있는 주머니에는 하얀 손수건을 꽂고 등의자에 걸터앉아 다리를 꼬고, 그리고 이번에도 역시 웃고 있다. 이번 미소는 주름투성이의 원숭이 웃음이 아니라 꽤 능란한 미소가 되어 있지만, 그러나 인간의 웃음이라고 하기에는 어딘지 걸린다. 피의 무게랄까 생명의 깊은 맛이랄까, 그런 충실감이 전혀 없는, 새처럼 가벼운 것이 아니라 그야말로 깃털처럼 가벼운, 그냥 하얀 종이 한 장처럼 그렇게 웃고 있다. 즉 하나부터 열까지 꾸민 듯한 느낌이 드는 것이다. 겉멋이 잔뜩 들었다고 하기에는 뭔가 부족하다. 경박하다고 하기도 그렇다. 교태를 부리고 있다고 하는 것도 부적절하다. 멋쟁이라고 하는 것도 물론 부적합하다. 게다가 자세히 뜯어보면 여자 같은 미모를 가진 이 학생한테서도 역시 어딘지 악몽 비슷한 섬뜩한 것이 느껴지는 것이었다. 나는 지금까지 이렇게 이상한 미남을 본 적이 한번도 없다. - <인간 실격> 중에서

이제는 나이를 짐작할 수도 없을 정도다. 머리는 희끗희끗하다. 그런 남자가 몹시 더러운 방(방 벽이 세 군데 정도 허물어져 내린 것이 그 사진에 뚜렷하게 찍혀 있었다.) 한쪽 구석에서 작은 화로에 양손을 쪼이고 있는데, 이번에는 웃고 있지 않다. 아무런 표정이 없다. 말하자면 쭈그리고 앉아 화로에 양손을 쪼이다가 그냥 그대로 죽어간 것 같은, 정말로 기분 나쁘고 불길한 냄새를 풍기는 사진이다. 이상한 것은 그뿐이 아니다. 그 사진에는 얼굴이 비교적 크게 찍혀 있어서 그 생김새를 자세히 살펴볼 수가 있었는데 이마도 평범, 이마의 주름도 평범, 눈썹도 평범, 눈도 평범, 코도 입도 턱도…… 아아, 그 얼굴에는 표정이 없을 뿐만 아니라 인상조차 없다. 특징이 없는 것이다. - <인간 실격> 중에서
