《The Journals of John Cheever》에서 알게 된 건, 존 치버가 술과 성 정체성, 작가이자 가장으로서의 근심과 불안으로 고통받았다는 거다. 반복되는 근심과 위스키에 대한 갈증 그리고 결혼생활의 쓰디쓴 불가사의로 고통받고 있다며, 이 모든 게 동시에 벌어지고 있다고 쓴 존 치버. 그는 끊임없이 남자들을 욕망하는 양성애 성향으로도 괴로워했는데… 남자와 잠자리를 하고 난 후엔 사회의 비난과 처벌의 위협을 실감하고 두려워했다. 주체할 수 없는 고독감과 성애를 향한 곤혹스러운 허기를 덜기 위해 발버둥쳤고, 지신이 한 행동이 잘못이 아님을, 사랑하는 그 누구에게도 해를 끼치지 않았음을 믿는다며 스스로를 다독였다. 불안해하면서도 평생에 걸쳐 여러 명의 남성 그리고 여성과 관계를 맺었음을 고백했다.

존 치버는 성공과 명성을 갈망하면서도 그에 따르는 책임감을 두려워했고, 아내와 아이들을 사랑했지만, 남녀를 가리지 않고 끊임없이 사랑을 찾아 방랑했으며 처절하게 외로워했다. 그가 일기에 밝힌 결혼생활은 서로를 파괴하는 전쟁과도 같았다. 전립선에 문제가 있는 남자와 결혼하는 것과 동성애자와 결혼하는 것 중 어느 것이 더 여자에 나쁠 일인지를 궁금해하고. 동시에 작가로서 불안감도 어김없이 드러내며 그런 자신을 책망했다. “잘 쓸 것, 정열적으로 쓸 것, 좀 더 자유롭게 쓸 것, 너그러워질 것, 자신에게 좀 더 엄격해질 것, 욕망의 물리적 힘뿐 아니라 그 지배력에 대해서도 인지할 것, 글을 쓸 것, 사랑할 것.˝ 자신은 쓸모없는 감정의 수화물들을 짊어지고 여행한다면서, 배고픔, 갈증, 근심, 공포가 자신 생각을 흐리게 한다고 적었다. 그러면서 자기 작품의 장점은 자신이 사랑이나 행복을 찾는 일에 성공하지 못한 거라고 평했다. 그래서일까? 자신의 민낯을 적나하게 드러냈다. 읽는 내내, 자기 내면을 철저하게 들여다보고 그 감정과 생각을 표현하는 솔직함에 놀랬다. 정말이지 글쓰기에 기본은 자신을 알고 그 알고 있는 걸 솔직하게 쓰는 것에서 비롯되는 게 아닐까?

They have ceremonies to exalt the love of men and women. They make their vows to music and the sound of bells. They have invented ways to heat their houses in the winter and cool them in the summer. They have even invented engines to cut their grass. They have free schools for the pursuit of knowledge, pools to swim in, zoos, vast manufactories of all kinds. They explore space and the trenches of the sea. Oh, let us rush to see this world."
