의학 문헌은 매우 방대하기 때문에 모든 문헌을 다 검색한다는 것은 불가능하다. 그러므로 3가지 측면에서 검색 범위를 선택하여야 한다.
어떤 문헌을 검색할 것인가? : kind of literature어떤 언어를 사용할 것인가? : language얼마나 오래된 것까지 검색할 것인가? : period of time의학논문을 위한 문헌 검색의 대상은 대부분 정기간행물의 논문이나 종설, 저서 등을범위로 하고 주로 영문으로 된 문헌을 검색한다. 때로는 영문 이외의 논문도 영문으로된 초록이 있으므로 이를 읽어 보고 필요하면 선별하여 번역을 의뢰하는 방법이 좋다고생각된다. 종설의 검색은 가장 최근의 것을 참고로 하면 그 이전의 모든 문헌이 이미 검색되어 있어 많은 도움이 될 때가 있다. 대부분의 연구논문은 논문을 쓰는 시점 이전의모든 문헌을 찾아 보고 필요에 따라 그 후에도 정기적으로 검색을 하여 혹시 빠진 문헌이 없는지 찾아 보는 자세를 가져야 한다.
