When I saw the title of the book, I wondered if something was upside down or if the main character was in love.
I opened the book, curious to see what it was about.
In this novel, the narrative alternates between the perspectives of Bryce Loski and Julianna Baker (often referred to as Juli Baker). Each chapter of the book is written in the first person and shifts between these two characters' viewpoints.
From the perspective of Julie, who falls in love at first sight, and Bryce, who runs away from her because she is a burden, the novel is a moving portrait of two children whose worlds are turned upside down as they grow up, changing not only the way they see each other, but also the way they see others, the world, and themselves, learning to see the landscape as a whole, not just parts of it. They realize that the other person may not be who they thought they were all along.
Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss.... But every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.

I shook my head. Flat, glossy, iridescent. What was up with that? Juli Baker had always seemed just plain dusty to me.
Watching the two main characters get to know each other was heartbreaking, heartwarming, and touching. In particular, Bryce's maternal grandfather and Julie's father's words to Julie made me realize that this book is about the way we see the world and people, and their warm words were very memorable.
A painting is more than the sume of it's parts.
He wanted to know about the sycamore tree and seemed to understand exactly what I meant when I told about the whole being greater than the sum of its part. " It's that way with people, too, " he said, " only with people it's sometimes that the whole is less than the sum of the parts.
I highly recommend reading this novel, where the two main characters get to know each other's colors.
