14 When she recognized Peter‘s voice, she was so over-joyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed,
"Peter is at the door!" - P106

22 They shouted, "This is the voice of a god, not of aman. - P107

23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise toGod, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he waseaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God continued to spread and flour-ish. - P107

Herod goes to Caesarea andwhen people shout that he is a god and he accepts their praise, an angel ofGod strikes him down. Barnabas and Saul return to Jerusalem with John. - P107

The story of Peter‘s miraculous return is recounted in full, includingthe humor of the situation: Rhoda is so happy to hear Peter‘s voice sheforgets to open the door and runs off to tell the others, who insist itis just an angel.  - P108

Meanwhile Peter keeps knocking and finally gets thebewildered believers to let him in. This story displays for us the purejoy that we can experience when we are filled with the Spirit.  - P108

Whenwe grasp how good God is to us, through answered prayers and dailyprovisions, we cannot help but laugh and rejoice, even amid difficultcircumstances.  - P108

And as Peter tells the people to share the great news ofwhat just happened, we should also testify and tell others what the Lordhas done for us with overflowing gladness. - P108

The proverb "Pride goes before destruction" (Prov. 16:18) is epitomizedin the death of King Herod. As the people shout flatteries to him, hetakes all the credit, revealing his oversized ego.  - P108

But God is experiencedat dealing with such egos, and he fells Herod with a most painful death.

The irony is striking: a man wearing splendid royal robes on the outsideends up being eaten by worms on the inside.  - P108

When we become filledwith pride, it is an affront to God because we act like we know morethan Him or are worthy of praise that belongs to Him.  - P108

We must therefore be especially mindful 
whenever we are praised by others, lest westeal glory away from God. - P108

The Holy Spirit sets Barnabas and Saul apart for the work of God. They travelto Paphos where a Jewish sorcerer called Bar-Jesus who works under theproconsul.  - P111

When he sends for Barnabas and Saul to hear the word of God,
Bar-Jesus opposes them. Paul confronts him and says he will become blind.
Darkness comes over him, and the proconsul believes. - P111

Notice the diversity on display at the church in Antioch: Barnabas isa Jew, Simeon is most likely Black, Lucius is from North Africa, andManaen is a Jewish childhood friend of Herod-the Herod who be-headed John the Baptist.  - P112

The gospel is truly for all people.  - P112

We shouldnever think that anybody, for whatever reason, is outside the reach ofGod‘s kingdom. And we ought to build relationships-peer to peerand church to church-with brothers and sisters in Christ who are notof the same ethnicity or background as ourselves.  - P112

When we do so, weare demonstrating that the kingdom of God is a multiethnic kingdomwhere all are welcome. - P112

Dear Lord, I praise You because Your kingdom is always on the move as Youdesire for all nations to come to know You.  - P113

거룩은 다른 말로 ‘세상과의 차별화‘다. 히브리어로 ‘거룩‘은 ‘카도쉬‘인데, 이 단어의 어원적 의미는 ‘구별된 것‘이란 뜻이다. 또한 ‘성도‘
는 ‘거룩한 무리‘를 뜻하는데, 세상과 구별된 사람들인 것이다. - P175

16-17 그들은 하나님 그들의 하나님께서 하신 모든 말씀을 버리고, 하나님 대신 수송아지 형상의 두 신상과 창녀 여신 아세라를 위한 남근 목상을 섬겼다. 그들은 우주의 하늘 신과 여신을 숭배하고, 바알의 음란한 종교 산당들에 자주 드나들었다. 급기야는 자신들의 자녀를 불살라 제물로 바치는 지경에까지 이르렀다! 그들은 마법과 주술에 빠져들었다. 한마디로 그들은 온갖 악한 일로 스스로를 더럽혔다. 결국 하나님께서는 더 이상 참을 수가 없으셨다. - P460

18-20 하나님께서 매우 진노하셔서 그들을 없애 버리고 그 땅에서 영원히 몰아내시니, 오직 유다 지파만 남았다. (사실 유다도 크게 나을것은 없었다. 유다도 하나님의 명령을 지키지 않았고, 이스라엘이 택한 것과 똑같은 생활방식에 빠져들었다.) 하나님께서 이스라엘과 관계된 자들을 모두 버리셨고, 그들의 삶을 괴롭게 하셨으며, 침략자들에게착취당하도록 내버려 두셨다. 그리고 마침내 그들을 눈앞에서 쫓아내셨다. - P460

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the prophet Agabus prophesies in Artioch about a large famine that will impact many regions under theRoman Empire. This famine impacts the Jerusalem church as well, sothe believers in Antioch put together financial and material supportthat Barnabas and Paul take back to Jerusalem.  - P100

We should freely give what we can since Christ has freelygiven His life for us.  - P100

After all, the global body of Christ is comprised oflocal churches, all united in our mission to glorify our Lord. - P100

Sometimes, God gives us bright days. We can clearly see the light andfeel the warmth of the risen Son. Other times, God gives us dark days.

In the darkness and hardships, we may not see or feel the power of theSon‘s resurrection. But on these days when we cannot see what Godcan see, we still have the privilege of knowing that God promises to befaithful to His plan to redeem a broken world through His Son JesusChrist who died for our sins-and rose again!  - P101

3 When he saw that this met with approval among theJews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happenedduring the Festival of Unleavened Bread. - P102

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. - P102

12 When this had dawned on him, he went to the houseof Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, wheremany people had gathered and were praying. - P103

King Herod arrests and imprisons Peter because he sees that the Jews approveof this. The church prays for Peter.  - P103

The night before Peter‘s trial, an angelappears and leads him out of the prison. Once Peter is outside, he knows Godhas rescued him from Herod and the Jews who had ill intentions toward him.
He goes to Mary‘s house, where people are praying. - P103

Thepassage opens on a shocking and sorrowful scene: King Herodpersecutes the believers and kills the apostle James, brother of John.

This wins Herod the approval of the Jews, so he also imprisons Peter.
Amid this intense persecution, the believers‘ immediate response isprayer.  - P104

This story emphasizes how the growth of the church, even un-der oppression, is due to God‘s active care and involvement.  - P104

We mustembody this truth in our sufferings as well. In our sorrow, God is stillworking things out for our good. So, let us earnestly cling to Him inprayer. - P104

 We may lose much but our losses do not take God by surprise.
He has promised that no part of our suffering for Christgoes unnoticedor unrewarded. - P104

Prayer is an essential part of our relationship with Jesus. Simply put,
prayer is communicating with God.  - P105

Many today might think thatprayer is reserved for the religious, but prayer is embedded in our verynature- the very first humans walked and spoke with God. The firstbiblical record of people praying to God as we pray today is found inGenesis 4:26, "At that time people began to call on the name of theLORD."

Praying can be difficult. Perhaps you barely pray because you feel youcan manage life‘s challenges by relying on yourself-no need to askGod for help.  - P105

Or perhaps you think prayer is ineffective because youhave not received what you have prayed for. Then again, you mightbut cannot find time for it amid a busy schedule.  - P105

Or youwant to praymight be reluctant to pray for fear of having to face your own sins. - P105

Regardless of the reasons why we are not praying, the writings of theapostle Paul help us see prayer in a healthier way. We pray to expressthanks to God (Col. 1:3). We pray to ask God to help others (Col.
1:9), and we can also ask others to pray for us (Col. 4:3; 2 Thess. 3:1).

Lastly, Scripture encourages us to pray continually, without ceasing(Rom. 12:12; 1 Thess. 5:17). A prayerful life replenishes our souls andis also one of the ways we show love to other believers. - P105
