First, the author-ities try imprisonment. Then, they flog the apostles. Finally, they com-mand them to be silent. But these have the opposite effect: the apostlesrejoice that they are "worthy of suffering" for Jesus!  - P152

Today, nearly twothousand years later, God‘s kingdom continues spreading over all theworld.  - P152

Gamaliel‘s words in verse 39 have proven true: God‘s kingdomcannot be stopped.  - P152

When we obey God despite suffering, nothing canprevent His kingdom from advancing. As Jesus promised, "I will buildmy church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matt. 16:18). - P152

In the midst of the flourishing Early Church, we come across a soberingstory. As others such as Barnabas show great generosity by selling theirproperty to give to others in need, Ananias and Sapphira decide to keepsome of the money for themselves while maintaining an appearance ofselfless giving.  - P146

Their deadly sin, which Peter exposes, is lying: by theirpublic act in the temple, the married couple pretend that they are givingthe full sum away.  - P146

God punishes them because such a lack of integritywill be poison to this growing community. There are countless reasonswe might be tempted to lie, such as desiring recognition, hiding ourflaws, and protecting ourselves from shame.  - P146

May this story exhort us tosteer clear of deceit and instead live with integrity. - P146

흔히 우리는 자신이 하나님의 택함과 사랑을 받는 자이므로 하나님께 특별대우를 받을 것이라 여긴다. 자연스러운 기대이기는 하다. 그분을 따르는 제자가 되었으니 이제 막다른 골목을 만나거나, 진창길로 접어들거나, 목적지가 다른 여행자들에게서 끔찍한 일을 당하는 일 따위는 없을 것이라 기대한다. 이해 못할 바는 아니다. 그러나 하나님을 따르는 제자들이라고 해서 인생길에서 특별대접을 받는 것은 아니다. 이 사실은 늘 우리를 놀라게 한다. 그런데더욱 놀라운 사실은, 그러한 순간에 우리의 길동무가 되어 주는 이들을 ‘성경‘ 속에서 만날 수 있다는 것이다.
그 반가운 길동무 중 하나가 바로 예언자 하박국이다.  - P785

하박국은 우리와 출발점이 같았다. 그 역시 우리처럼 혼란에 빠져 있었고 불평했으며, 심지어 하나님을 고발하기도 했다. 그러나 그는그 자리에 머물지 않았다. 그는 더 나아갔다. 결국 그는 하나님을 사랑하는 자들에게는 삶 속의 모든 것들이 협력하여 선을 이루어 내는그런 세상에 도달하게 되었다. 우리를 길동무로 데리고서 말이다. - P788
