픽셀은 세 가지 색만으로 이루어져 있다. 빨간색, 초록색, 파란색. 이 색 체계를 RGB라고 하는데, 각각 Red(빨간색), Green(초록색), Blue(파란색)의 머리글자를 따온 이름이다. 픽셀에는 세 가지 색만 드러난다면, 어떻게 화면에는 그렇게 다양한 색이 나타나는 것일까? 그 이유는 바로 빛을 이용해 색을 만드는 가산혼합additive color mixing 방식을 사용하기 때문이다. 빨간색, 초록색, 파란색은 빛의 삼원색additive primaries이다. 이 세 가지 색의 빛을 조합하면 대부분의 색을 표현할 수 있다. 빨강, 초록, 파랑. 이 세 가지 광원을 모두 겹치면 흰색이 된다. 빨강과 초록을 겹치면 노랑, 초록과 파랑을 합치면 청록, 빨강과 파랑을 섞으면 자홍이 된다. 각 색을 얼마나 섞었는지 비율을 표시하기 위해 색마다 값을 부여한다. 0은 해당 색을 섞지 않았다는 뜻이며 값이 커질수록 그 색의 비율이 커진다는 뜻이다. 보통 RGB 모델에서는 각 색마다 0에서 255까지의 값을 사용한다.

오늘날 회화에서 가장 많이 사용되는 원색은 청록색, 노란색, 자홍색이다. 이 세 가지는 대부분의 프린터 카트리지에 들어가는 색상들이기도 하다. 청록색은 프탈로시아닌 블루, 자홍색은 퀴나크리돈 마젠타, 노란색은 아릴라이드 옐로우 또는 황화 카드뮴이다. 이 세 가지 색을 섞으면 우리가 상상하는 모든 색을 만들 수 있다. Cyan(청록색), Magenta(자홍색), Yellow(노란색)의 머리글자를 따서 CMY라고 부른다. CMY에서는 자홍색과 노란색을 더하면 빨간색이 되고, 자홍색과 청록색을 더하면 파란색, 청록색과 노란색을 더하면 초록색, 세 가지 색을 모두 섞으면 검은색에 가까운 어두운 색이 된다. 하지만 이렇게 얻은 검은색은 ‘순수한 검은색Pure black’에 비해 깊이가 부족하다.* 그래서 CMY 모델에 ‘키key’ 색상이 하나 추가된다. 보통은 Black(검은색)을 뜻한다. 그렇게 CMYK 또는 CMYB 모델이 탄생한다. 현재 사용되는 컬러 프린트는 CMY 색상에 더해 검은색 카트리지를 사용하여 명암과 대비감을 강화한다. 하지만 RGB와 CMY가 서로 다른 모델이기 때문에 모니터로 보는 색과 인쇄하여 보는 색에는 차이가 존재한다. RGB 색상은 빛의 반사나 방출로 표현되는 색이고, CMY는 빛의 흡수로 만들어지는 색이기 때문이다
