He did not like to look at the fish anymore since he hadbeen mutilated. When the fish had been hit it was as though he himself were hit.

It was too good to last, he thought. I wish it had been a dream now and that I had never hooked the fish and was alone in bed on the newspapers.

하지만 나는 내 물고기를 물어뜯은 상어 놈을 죽였어, 노인은 생각했다. 게다가 놈은 내가 여태껏 본 덴투소 중에서 제일 큰 놈이었어. 하느님도 아시겠지만 난 큰 놈들을 많이 봤어.
오래가기에는 너무나 좋은 일이었어, 노인은 생각했다. 차라리 모든 게 다 꿈이라면, 내가 저 물고기를 낚은 일이 전혀 없던 일이고 그저 혼자 침대에 신문지를 깔고 누워 있는 거라면 좋을 텐데.
