Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rosehigh out of the water showing all his great length and width and all his power and his beauty. He seemed to hang in the air above the old man in the skiff. Then he fell into the water with a crash that sent spray over the old man and over all of the skiff.

노인은 모든 고통과 마지막 남은 힘과 오랫동안 잊고 지냈던먼 옛날의 자존심을 전부 끌어모아 물고기의 고통과 맞서게 했다. 물고기는 다가오며 옆으로 뒤집어졌다. 그러고는 옆으로 누운 채 가만히 헤엄치며 주둥이가 뱃전에 거의 닿을 정도로 가까이 왔다가 배 옆을 지나치기 시작했다. 길고 넓고 거대한 은빛 몸이, 보랏빛 줄무늬를 드러낸 채 물속을 한없이 지나갔다.
노인은 낚싯줄을 내려놓고 발로 밟아 눌렀다. 그리고 작살을 할 수 있는 한 높이 쳐들었다. 그러고는 있는 힘껏, 아니 없는 힘까지 모두 짜내어, 노인의 가슴 높이만큼이나 높이 물 밖으로 솟아 있는 거대한 가슴지느러미 바로 뒤 옆구리에다 작살을 쑤셔박았다. 쇠끝이 살 속을 뚫고 들어가는 감촉이 느껴졌다. 그는 작살에 몸을 기대고 좀더 깊이 쑤셔넣었다. 그런 다음 다시 온몸의 무게를 실어 작살을 깊숙이 박아 넣었다.
그러자 물고기는 죽음을 몸에 담은 채 마지막 활기를 짜내어 자신의 엄청난 길이와 넓이, 그리고 굉장한 힘과 아름다움, 그 모든 것을 한껏 드러내면서 수면 위로 높이 솟구쳐올랐다. 물고기는 한순간 배에 탄 노인의 머리 위 허공에 매달려 있는 것처럼 보였다. 그러더니 이내 물속으로 철썩 떨어지며 노인과 배 위에 물보라를 온통 뒤집어씌웠다.
