He always thought of the sea as la mar which is whatpeople call her in Spanish when they love her. Sometimesthose who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the sharklivers had brought much money, spoke of her as el mar which is masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favours, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them. He could not see the green of the shore now but only the tops of the blue hills that showed white as though they were snow-capped and the clouds that looked like highsnow mountains above them. The myriad flecks ofthe plankton were annulled now by the high sun and it was only the great deep prisms in the blue water that the old man saw now with his lines going straight down intothe water that was a mile deep.

초록색 선으로 보이던 해안은 이제 더이상 눈에 띄지 않았다. 다만 눈 덮인 듯이 꼭대기가 하얗게 보이는 파란 산봉우리들과 그 위로 높은 설산처럼 피어오른 뭉게구름만이 겨우 보였다. 바다는 아주 검푸른 색이었고 햇빛은 물에 반사되며 무지갯빛으로 부서졌다. 무수히 밀집한 반점처럼 떠 있던 플랑크톤 떼는 높이 내리쬐는 햇빛을 받아 모두 사라져버렸다. 이제 노인의 눈에 보이는 거라곤 무지갯빛 광채를 반사하는 깊고 넓은 짙푸른 바다와, 천오백 미터가 넘는 깊은 바다에 곧게 드리워진 낚싯줄밖에 없었다.

Then he began to pity the great fish that he had hooked.
He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought. Never have I had such a strong fish nor one who acted so strangely. Perhaps he is too wise to jump. He could ruin me by jumping or by a wild rush. But perhaps he has been hooked many times before and he knows that this is how he should make his fight. He cannot know that
it is only one man against him, nor that it is an old man.
But what a great fish he is and what will he bring in themarket if the flesh is good. He took the bait like a maleand he pulls like a male and his fight has no panic in it. I wonder if he has any plans or if he is just as desperate as Iam?

그러다가 노인은 지금 낚싯바늘에 걸려 있는 큰 물고기가 불쌍하게 느껴졌다. 놈은 놀랍고 괴상한 녀석이야. 도대체 나이를 얼마나 먹은 녀석일까. 노인은 생각했다. 내 평생 이렇게 힘센 고기를 잡아본 적도 없고, 또 이렇게 이상하게 구는 놈도 처음이야.
너무 영리해서 날뛰지도 않는 것 같아. 격렬하게 날뛰거나 달려들어서 날 결딴내버릴 수도 있는데 말이야. 어쩌면 예전에 낚싯바늘에 걸린 적이 여러 번 있어서 이런 때 어떻게 싸워야 하는지 아는지도 몰라. 놈은 자기 상대가 한 사람밖에 없다는 걸, 그것도 늙은이일 뿐이라는 걸 모르겠지. 아무튼 굉장히 큰 물고기야.
육질만 나쁘지 않다면 시장에서 상당한 값을 받겠어. 미끼를 무는 기세나 줄을 끄는 모양이 꼭 수놈 같아. 싸우면서도 공포에 질린 기색이 전혀 없고 말이야. 놈에게 나름대로 무슨 계획이 있는건지, 아니면 나처럼 그저 필사적으로 버티고 있을 뿐인지 궁금하군. - P89
