이 책은 한국 근현대 미술사를 이해하는 데 도움 된다. 당시 시대 상황과 예술의 관계를 이해하고, 주요 예술가들의 작품 세계와 삶을 연결하며 감상할 좋은 기회가 된다.

땅바닥에 죽은 매미가 널브러져 있고, 개미가 모여들고, 어느 아이가 그 순간을 바라보는 장면으로 그림책의 첫 장이 시작된다. 죽음을 생각하지 않는 삶이라는 게 있을 수 없음을 이 그림책의 첫 장에서 보여주는 것 같다.
‘죽음‘에서 시작하는 이 그림책은 그림과 시어가 호응하고 그림과 그림이 서로 연결되며 ‘살아 있다는 것‘을 이야기한다. ‘살아 있다는 건‘이라는 시를 따라 그림책 속 사람들이 연결되어 간다. 그림책을 읽는 나의 마음도 어느샌가 이들과 연결되어 간다. 그렇게 연결되어 지나가는 순간순간이 참 좋다.

I read Doris Lessing's short story "To Room Nineteen." This work was published in 1983, and I wanted to read it in connection with Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," which was published about 100 years earlier in 1892.
Both stories deal with themes of oppression, confinement, societal expectations of women, and the psychological harm they can cause. The protagonist of "To Room Nineteen," Susan, feels suffocated by the roles she is expected to fulfill as a wife and mother, experiencing psychological distress as a result. This story depicts the societal expectations surrounding marriage and motherhood, but also portrays the emptiness and anxiety that women cannot shake off.
Although there is a slight time gap of less than 100 years between "The Yellow Wallpaper" and this work, they both illuminate the limits of autonomy and psychological conflicts experienced by women. I was curious if Susan's life and treatment in Doris Lessing's novel had improved slightly compared to a century ago. Despite social progress and advancements in women's rights since the late 19th century, I couldn't help but wonder if many women still haven't broken free from the struggles and constraints of a century ago.

Evelyn Hugo in "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" (Taylor Jenkins Reid) is quite different from the women in "The Yellow Wallpaper" (short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman) or "To Room Nineteen" (short story by Doris Lessing) that I read last month. She is fierce, bold, socially and politically astute, and pioneers her life autonomously. Evelyn distinguishes between sex as an act and sexuality as a serious expression of desire and pleasure, while not conforming to stereotypes, sometimes using sex as a transaction.
If Evelyn's love for her seven husbands can be categorized as sex and friendship (especially with Harry), understanding (especially with Robert), her love for Cecelia can be seen as sexuality, and her love for her daughter Connor can be seen as maternal. This novel seems to tell us about living and loving in all its forms through Evelyn's life story.
Another important aspect addressed in this novel is 'identity.' Evelyn is Cuban but adorns herself like a white person, engages in social activities, and is bisexual. Monique, who ghostwrites Evelyn's life story, is biracial, born between black and white. Readers can perceive their anxieties and confused emotions revealed throughout the novel. Just as Evelyn firmly establishes her identity as she lives, Monique's journey to find herself was also impressive.
One interesting aspect of this novel is the insertion of news articles and blog posts throughout. Not only do they deliver necessary information to the novel without being boring, but they also create an effect that makes Evelyn's story feel real.
