When my wife went in the hospital for surgery, a rule prohibited children under 12
from visiting patients.
Our 11-year-old seemed to understand, but our six-year-old took the restriction very hard.
We discovered why she was so unusually upset when we heard her talking to
her mother on the phone.
As she said good-by, she tearfully said;
"I'll see you when I'm 12, Mom!"
아내가 수술을 받기 위해 병원에 입원했는데, 그 병원규칙은 12세 미만 어린이가
환자를 방문하는것을 금지하고 있었다.
11 살짜리는 그 규정을 이해하는 것으로 보였으나 여섯 살짜리는 그 금지 규정을
무척 충격적으로 받아들였다.
어째서 그토록 심하게 충격적으로 받아들이는가를 깨닫게 된 것은 그 아이와
엄마의 전화 통화를 엿듣고 나서였다.
통화를 끝내면서 딸아이는 눈물을 글썽이면서 말하는 것이었다.
"엄마, 그럼 내가 열두 살이 되면 만나요!"
