1) 위도 측정

(1) 북극성 측정 --> 북위도에서 북극성의 고도를 측정하면 그것이 측정자의 위도가 됩니다. 당연히 그렇겠지요. 북극성이 거의 0도 상에 있으니까 북극성을 몇도로 보느냐가 그 지점의 위도겠지요. 이때 북극성의 고도를 측정하는 데 사용하는 천측기구가 원측의(astrolabe), 사분의, 직각기, 육분의, 옥탄트 등입니다.(모양 및 사용법은 항해사 메뉴 참조)

(2) 기타 태양이나 항성을 이용하는 법 --> 이 경우에는 복잡합니다. 우선 태양이나 항성의 고도를 측정하는 것은 마찬가지입니다. 이렇게 해서 구한 항성의 고도와 측정 당시의 태양이나 항성의 declination이라는 것을 계산해 놓은 표(천측력)을 이용하여 몇 가지 계산식을 거쳐 위도를 계산해 냅니다.(이를 알고 싶으시면 천문항해학이란 책을 참조하시면 됩니다. 그러나 꽤 복잡하고 전문적입니다. 전문 항해사나 해양대학 항해학과에서 전문과목으로 가르치고 있지요)

2) 경도 측정
항해사 메뉴의 경도 측정을 참조하시면 됩니다만, 간단히 말하면 지구는 360도 이므로 특정 지점에서 경도로 얼마만큼 이동했는지가 바로 경도이므로 항해한 시간을 정확하게 재면 그것이 경도가 됩니다. 19세기 후반에 영국 그리니치를 지나는 자오선을 경도 0도로 결정하여 우리나라는 +9시간대를 사용하고 있지요. 이 경우에는 시계가 매우 정확해야 합니다. 4초가 틀리면 1마일의 오차가 나니까요. 그렇게 해서 만들어진 것이 정밀시계인 Chronometer라는 시계입니다. 이것도 영국인인 존 해리슨이라는 사람이 18세기 말 경에 발명하여 쿡의 탐사 때 시험하여 정밀성 및 정확도를 인정받았지요. 이에 대해서는 <정밀시계 이야기>라는 책이 국내에 번역되어 있습니다.

* 여기에서 천측을 통해 알 수 있는 것은 위치선 하나이지요. 실제 항해사들이 천측을 통해 위치를 구하는 것은 여러 개의 항성(북극성, 태양, 달, 기타 항성)을 이용하여 위치선 몇 개를 구하여 교차선을 만들어 대략의 위치를 측정하고 있지요. 하지만 오늘날 이렇게 하는 항해사나 배는 거의 없습니다. GPS가 법정 장비로 탑재되어 있으니까요. 그렇게 비싸지도 않습니다. 불과 몇 백만원에 불과하지요. 그러니 어렵고 정확하지 않은 천측을 항해사들이 할 필요는 없습니다. 비상시를 위해 배우고 가끔 훈련하고 있는 정도지요.
