The Lord appears to Paul in a vision and encourages him to keep speaking.

[NIV] 9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:

Given all the opposition Paul has received in Corinth, it would not havebeen surprising if he had quickly moved on to another city.  - P40

However,
Jesus comes to him in a vision and gives him great encouragement: Heis with Paul and will protect him from harm.  - P40

This leads Paul to stay inCorinth for a year and a half. Though we remember Paul as someonewho accomplished extraordinary things for Christ, he did not achieveany of it by his own strength.  - P40

He depended completely on Jesus foreverything he did.  - P40

Let us take Jesus‘ words to Paul as an encourage-ment for ourselves today. We do not need to be afraid.  - P40

We can keep onsharing the good news. We should not be silent, for Christ is with us. - P40

The Jews of Corinth take Paul before Gallio, the procónsul of Achaia,
accusing him of violating the law.  - P40

Before Paul even has a chance todefend himself, Gallio quickly dismisses the charges as baseless. Just asJesus promised, He is with Paul and works through the people of thecity-powerful people-to protect him.  - P40

It could have easily gone theother way. Gallio could have bowed to public pressure and punishedPaul just to appease the crowd. But he doesn‘t.  - P40

He sees through thefalse accusations and makes a just decision. Ultimately, this is God‘s hand at work because His plans for Paul are far from finished.  - P40

He isthe one orchestrating the events of Paul‘s life so that his gospel ministrycan continue. - P40

Lord Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Thank you for protecting mefrom those who wish to harm me.  - P41

The apostle Paul understood that both God‘s Word and God‘s worldtestified about Him.  - P33

Whenever he spoke to a Jewish audience, hereferred them to what they had already experienced of God: the Lawand the Prophets. But when he spoke to Gentiles, he referred them tothe clues God had placed in their context: their history, their culture,
and even their art.  - P33

While God‘s Word speaks clearly of His plan ofsalvation, the testimony of God‘s world reinforces the trustworthinessof His Word.  - P33

So let us be eager to study God‘s Word but also to learnabout His world. And let us ask Him for open eyes so that we maypoint others to the connection between the two. - P33

Heavenly Father, I praise You as the one, true God. Help me to center my life onYou rather than myself. Thank you for the beautiful gospel, and I ask for cour-age to share that gospel with those who need to hear it. In Jesus‘ name, amen. - P33

8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire house-hold believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthianswho heard Paul believed and were baptized.

Paul goes to Corinth, where he meets Aquila and Priscilla. They work together,
and on Sabbaths, Paul speaks at the synagogue. When Silas and Timothy alsoarrive in Corinth, Paul devotes his time to preaching about Jesus.  - P35

The peopleoppose Paul with abusive protests, so Paul leaves and goes to Titius Justus‘shouse. Still, many Corinthians believe and are baptized. - P35

After Paul arrives in Corinth, he meets Aquila and Priscilla whom hewill later commend in his letters as very supportive coworkers in Christ(Rom. 16:3).  - P36

While Paul stays and works with them as a tentmaker,
he also continues to preach in the synagogues every Sabbath. MostChristians today view Paul as heroic figure-he is the author of most ofthe New Testament and was perhaps the greatest missionary in churchhistory.  - P36

But here, we see Paul as an ordinary man who works to makea living, depends on the hospitality of others, and preaches when hehas the opportunity.  - P36

His life shows that we can go about our everydaytasks-working, eating, resting, serving all the while being fueled byour passionate pursuit of Jesus Christ. - P36

When the Jews in Corinth oppose Paul and become abusive, he declaresthat he will take the gospel to the Gentiles instead.  - P36

Not all of the Jewsreject Paul‘s message, however. The following verses tell us that thesynagogue leader, Crispus, responds with faith in Jesus Christ. As aresult, he and his entire household are baptized (see 1 Cor. 1:14-16).

We should not be discouraged when we are ridiculed or rejected forsharing the gospel, for we do not know how God will use our ministryand who He might bring to faith through us. - P36

 Like the apostle Paul, letus always be moving forward in faith as we share the good news of JesusChrist with others. - P36

Heavenly Father, I confess that I sometimes trust more in my own effortsthan in Your work.  - P37

Most Jews in the synagogues Paul and his companions visited nodoubt upheld the popular belief that the Messiah would be a militaryliberator. So when the Messiah that Paul preached to them did notmatch their long-held views, they rejected Him.  - P27

While we may notreject the gospel itself, we can be slow to let our old thought patternsbe transformed by it. Our culture, upbringing, or personality hasaccustomed us to many erroneous ideas which we are often reluctantto letgo of.  - P26

But God‘s Word transcends our deepest convictions. Letus payclose attention as we read and study Scripture. Let us ask theSpirit to bring to our notice patterns of thought or behavior that runcontrary to His Word, and embrace what God wants to teach us. - P27

Heavenly Father, I praise You for the Scriptures in which You have revealedYour plan of salvation for the world. I confess that I have rebelled many timesagainst what You have commanded. I ask that you would increase my delightin Your Word. In Jesus‘ name, amen. - P27

In Athens, Paul is distressed to see so many idols. He talks to both Jews andGreeks about Jesus and the resurrection.  - P29

He is invited to speak more on this atthe Areopagus. He appeals to their religious nature and makes known to themwho their "unknown god" is.  - P29

Paul talks about God‘s creation and sovereigntyand calls the people to repentance. Some believe; others do not. - P29

While Paul waits for Silas and Timothy to arrive in Athens, he preach-es in a synagogue again and debates in the marketplace with variousphilosophers.  - P32

The Epicureans see religion as irrelevant and pursue per-sonal happiness while the Stoics see God as a cosmic force and pursueself-control and moral excellence.  - P32

To these philosophers, Paul preachessomething completely new and unique: a personal God who loves Hiscreation and took on human form to save them.  - P32

Unlike much of Greekphilosophy, Paul‘s message is not man-centered but God-centered.  - P32

Weare reminded how, amid the plurality of worldviews and religions thatsurround us, we as believers are to pursue Christ and His kingdom asour highest goal. - P32

When preaching to Jews, Paul would refer to Jewish history and writ-ings, but now as he speaks to a Greek audience, he uses philosophy andrefers to some famous Greek thinkers to make his case.  - P32

The heart of hismessage does not change, however. He still preaches the resurrection ofJesus Christ and calls people to repentance.  - P32

Learning from Paul, it iswise to adjust how we share the gospel based on who is listening, butwe must always maintain the essence of what we have to share: Jesus isthe Son of God who died on the cross and was raised from the dead.

His resurrection is the assurance of our salvation, and one day He willreturn to judge the world. Therefore, we must repent of our sins andturn to Him. - P32

2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, andon three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from theScriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Messiahhad to suffer and rise from the dead. "This Jesus I amproclaiming to you is the Messiah," he said. - P24

11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble characterthan those in Thessalonica, for they received the messagewith great eagerness and examined the Scriptures everyday to see if what Paul said was true. 12 As a result,
many of them believed, as did also a number of promi-nent Greek women and many Greek men. - P25

15 Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens andthen left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to joinhim as soon as possible. - P25

Paul preaches about the Messiah in Thessalonica. Some Jews and Greeksbelieve, but other Jews become jealous and start a riot. That same night, thebelievers send Paul and Silas to Berea to protect them. Many of the Jewishand Greek Bereans receive their message. The troublemakers in Thessalonicacome to Berea and stir up another crowd, so Paul is sent away. - P25

After arriving in Thessalonica, Paul argues in the synagogue for threeSabbath days about how Jesus is the Christ.  - P26

Offended by Paul‘s teach-ing, many Jewish leaders and their followers cause a citywide riot inpursuit of Paul and Silas whom they cannot find. Even in the face ofdanger and violence, Paul and Silas continue to proclaim Jesus as Mes-siah.  - P26

Like these courageous men of faith, we too may be attacked andpersecuted by the world for loving Jesus and for supporting those whoboldly preach His message.  - P26

In the face of opposition, let us perseverein the good work of sharing the gospel so that more people would hearand believe that Jesus Christ died for us and rose from thegrave to saveus from our sins. - P26

In stark contrast to the Thessalonian Jews, the Jews in Berea are morereceptive to the gospel. Many Greeks, including some prominent woman,- put their faith in Christ as well.  - P26

What made the Berean Jews morereceptive than the Thessalonian Jews? They did not judge Paul‘s mes-sage based on their own prejudices or expectations. Instead, they testedPaul‘s teaching against the teachings of Scriptures.  - P26

They examined theWord of God for themselves and discovered that Paul was speaking thetruth.  - P26

Likewise, when we hear someone preach or teach in the name ofJesus, we should study the Scriptures to confirm for ourselves that theirteaching aligns with the Word of God. - P26
