Even though we might not experience the level of renown that Daviddid, success in God‘s eyes means being faithful to what He has called usto do. - P26
However, this will likely attract the disdain of those who judgeus according to the world‘s standards. - P26
The sweet-smelling fragrance ofChrist in you may become a stench to the people around you who onlypursue their own interests. - P26
We must therefore remember that we arecalled to remain faithful to the Lord even when the world rejects us. - P26
And Jonathan made a covenant with David becausehe loved him as himself.1 Samuel 18:3 - P23
1 After David had finished talking with Saul, Jon-athan became one in spirit with David, and he lovedhim as himself. - P24
7 As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thou-sands, and David his tens of thousands."7 This was their song: "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!" - P25
8 Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly."They have credited David with tens of thousands," hethought, "but me with only thousands. What more canhe get but the kingdom?" - P25

3:4-6요한이 이러한 사명을 감당하게 된 것은 구약성경에기록된 선지자 이사야의 예언이 이루어진 것이다. "광야에서 큰소리로 외치는 메시지가 있다! 너희들은 주님이 오시는 길을 준비해라! 그분이 오시는 좁은 길을 평평하게 만들어라! 낮아져 있는모든 골짜기는 채워질 것이며 높아져 있는 모든 산과 언덕은 낮추어질 것이다. 그리고 굽은 길은 곧게 되고 거친 길은 평탄하게 될것이다! 그래서 모든 사람이 하나님의 그 구원을 보게 될 것이다!" - P47
그리고 그보다 더 어려운 것이 있다면,그 목소리 중에서도 회개를 요청하는 목소리가 되는 것이다. 따뜻하고 좋은 말로 구슬려도 어려운 판국에 "독사의 자식"이라고 부르며 사람들이 가장 듣기 싫어하는 죄를 선포하고 그들이 회개하도록 이끄는 일은 목숨을 걸어야 하는 일이다.세례 요한은 바로 그 일을 했다. 자신을 위해서가 아니라, 다가올 메시아 예수님의 길을 준비하려고 말이다. - P49
하지만 나는 다시 물어보고 싶다. 그러면 우리가 도대체 왜 목사가 되었냐고. 하나님의 목소리가 되지 못하고, 회개를 선포하지못한다면 우리는 그저 장사꾼이 되고 사기꾼이 되어야지, 도대체 - P49
자신의 죄를 깨닫게 해 달라고, 자기 잘못을 지적해 달라고. 그리고 내 영혼 안에서도 성령님의 목소리가 들린다.너는 분명한 죄를 말해 주고 미움받으라고, 오직 하나님의 소리가되고 사라지라고.그렇게 하기 위해 내가 가장 먼저 해야 할 일은 세례 요한 앞에 서는 것이다. - P50
나는 세례 요한 같은 성령님께 기도한다. "성령님 저의 죄를 알려 주소서. 그리고 제가 회개한 후에,담대하게 성도들에게 자신의 죄를 회개하라고 사랑으로 전할 수있도록 도와주시옵소서! 그런 뒤 그저 소리가 되어 사라지게 하소서! 제가 전한 메시지 때문에 미움받고 욕을 먹더라도, 사랑하는성도들이 회개하여 변화되게 하소서. 그래서 예수님께서 오시는길, 하나님의 나라가 오는 그 길을 예비하게 하소서!" - P50
섭섭하고 억울하고 인정받지 못해도 마지막 날까지 주님의 소리가 되게 하소서! 어쩔 수 없이 전해야 할회개의 메시지를 두루뭉술하게가 아니라 분명하게 외치게 도와주소서! 그래서 그들이 지금은 저를 미워해도 나중에 주님 앞에서감사하게 해 주소서! 주여, 세례 요한의 그 불타는 심령을 저에게도 부어 주소서! 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘!" - P51
