Now, everyone who sees Jerusalemscoffs at her ruin. But all of this happened because God did what He hadplanned. He allowed Israel‘s enemies to overthrow the city. - P55

Those who pass by Jerusalem and see its devastation mock the fallencity. The city that was once called the joy of the whole earth now liesin ruins. Jerusalem‘s enemies feel vindicated and rejoice over the city‘sdownfall.  - P56

However, even amid this tragedy, the author does not ques-tion God‘s Word or His faithfulness. Rather, he affirms that all this hashappened as a fulfillment of God‘s Word.  - P56

God‘s Word spoken fromlong ago clearly revealed that Jerusalem would perish if God‘s peoplerebelled against Him.  - P56

However, we know that this is not the end of thestory. God‘s great plan was to save those who could not save themselvesthrough the giving of His Son, the ultimate fulfillment of His Word. - P56

Father, I believe that Your Word, given to us in the form of the Bible, is trust-worthy and true.  - P57

In His anger, the Lord has extinguished Israel‘s splendor and torn down Judah‘sstrongholds. His anger is like fire that consumes everything. God has slain Hispeople as though He were an enemy.  - P51

The land is left desolate, and wailing isheard throughout the land. God‘s appointed festivals are forgotten. Destruc-tion is everywhere, and the people sit in mourning. - P51

In the second poem of Lamentations, the narrator openly expresses histhoughts and feelings regarding the punishment that God has inflictedupon Jerusalem.  - P52

God in His anger has withdrawn His favor andtection from His people by allowing them to experience ruin and de-struction. - P52

 This is ultimately a result of God‘s judgment upon Jerusalem‘ssins-revealing His sovereignty and power over human sin.  - P52

Hundredsof years later, God would exercise this sovereignty and power in a rad-ically different way by punishing His own Son so that sinners like uscould receive His forgiveness.  - P52

Christ‘s work on the cross has withdrawnGod‘s wrath from all those who repent and believe, and they now enjoyHis favor and protection. - P52

It is further revealed that God has judged His people by destroying thetemple in Jerusalem. The temple is where the Israelites came to offer upsacrifices to the Lord and receive forgiveness for their sins; it is whereGod‘s presence dwelt among His people.  - P52

It is through the temple thatthe Israelites were able to have fellowship with God, so its destructionbrought about great fear and despair.  - P52

The people mourned and lost allhope-but God had a plan. We now know that God planned to notonly rebuild the temple but to send His Holy Spirit so that He couldmake His dwelling place within each individual He would redeem byHis grace.  - P52

Believers today have a direct access to God that cannot bestolen away. - P52

It is human nature to always want to be right. So when we fail or makemistakes, we try to justify our actions to make ourselves look like weare in the right.  - P48

But only the Lord is always right.  - P48

Amid his suffering,
the author of Lamentations humbly acknowledges that the Lord wasright in allowing Jerusalem to be destroyed because of her sin.  - P48

Jerusalemcalls out to the people to look upon her suffering and realize the con-sequences of rebellion against a holy and all-powerful God.  - P48

The Lordhas made it clear from the beginning: sin leads to death but His Wordleads to life eternal.  - P48

Instead of trying to be righteous by our own merit,
let us rely on our God to make us righteous by the work of His Spirit. - P48

As God‘s people suffer the devastation of His wrath, they have begun Fto realize that it was their sin that brought about this tragic turn ofevents.  - P48

But what about those who brought destruction to Jerusalem?
How would God deal with them? God is able to work through allthings even the wicked-to accomplish His plans.  - P48

But just becausehe has allowed the enemies of Israel to defeat His people does not meanHe has suddenly switched sides. God is faithful to His children andpromises to deal with evildoers according to His perfect justice.  - P48

May wenot be discouraged when we see the enemies of God enjoy momentary success.

Our God will claim victory over the enemy and vindicate Hispeople in His time. - P48

Lord thank you that You are perfectly righteous and just. Help me to trustin Your promise that You will vindicate Your people and claim victory overYour enemies. Continue to mold me into Your likeness. In Jesus‘ name, amen. - P49
